Tough situation for Olynyk - once a player is hurt the NBA team can pull the plug on letting him play ( as the Nuggets did with Murray). To the Heat Olynyk is a money making asset ( they almost traded him to Dallas a few weeks ago ) , so I'm not surprised they've done this.

Olynyk missed the 2016 final Olympic qualifier with a shoulder injury and was so desperate to be around the guys he travelled with his arm in a sling when the team had some exhibition games in Spain before the Philippines tournament.

Olynyk out kills the optimism alot ... I'll still watch and route the boys on but yea this has turned into quite a disappointing summer for basketball Canada. All we can hope for is some sort of miracle I geuss.

I’m really hoping our shooters just go lights out one game. Pangos, Heslip and Wiltjer just gun and beat Australia.

I've been following this 'golden age' generation of Canadian ballers thanks largely to North Pole Hoops since Wiggins won OFSAA at Vaughan. 2011! I remember the day Cory committed to Texas. I remember watching a YouTube documentary series on Findlay Prep with Anthony Bennett and Myck Kabongo. I remember telling my friends about some Jamal Murray kid with NBA potential playing in Orangeville. The list goes on and on, I've followed every one. "2020," I'd say. "Just wait til 2020. Us vs. the USA for gold!"

Remind me to never care about the national team again.

Same thing brother. I’m living in the US and have been yipping to my friends for near a decade now. Really when Cory and TT were heading to Texas I could really see it coming. I went to catch EYBL games in LA to see Wiggins, Bennett, Bhullar, NWC and Jank all playing for Bounce. I was sure it was coming. What a waste.

I remember streaming Peach Jam one of those years. Wiggins, XRM, Ennis. I think they went up against Julius Randle.

I don’t know if there is a specific deadline on when teams can add players but I know that players are still dropping out so logic dictates that if players are dropping out other players can be added. It is honestly a disgrace that so many Canadian NBA players couldn’t care less about representing their country and it very well could cost them the Olympics when talent wise they probably have a second most talent of any nation in the world. But yeah, Bennett and Nicholson should be on speed dial with Nick nurse ASAP.

That's root the boys on. Route goes with 66. 8-)

Looks like NBA teams and or agents are pulling the plug on many of these players. Cory and Birch remain, G leaguers, Spanish league players. So another Scrubb-Doornekamp roster.

At this point i want Cory to drop out and just leave room for some of the former CIS guys and others looking to impress professional teams. Canada won't get the 2nd spot from Fiba Americas region. So their best shot now is to qualify from the wild card tournament which will be comprised of 16 other teams that haven't made it yet. Top 4 from that tournament will make the Olympics. The only issue is no dates have been set. If this tournament isn't during the summer offseason I really don't see how Canada makes the 2020 Olympics. What a total fail for the so called "golden generation".

Pretty sure its 4 separate 4 team tournaments, the winner of each make it. I wish it were a 16 team tournament with top 4. Id have a ton of confidence then. But this is way harder. Last time it happened we were in a group with France. We dominated everyone and played well against France but they beat us as they were stronger and just like that, lost 2 games in 2 tournaments while destroying every other game and were out.

Yes.
That tournament featured the best roster we have ever assembled, and very likely was the closest the "golden generation" will ever come to qualifying for the Olympics.

This isn't quite accurate. The Olympic qualifying tournament is set from June 23 -28 2020.

As it was pointed out it's 4 separate tournaments of 6 teams each with the winner of each group going to the Olympics.

Here is the competition format.

If Canada does not qualify directly out of the World Cup they may have to have a team qualify for one of the two spots allocated for each Fiba region ( Oceania and Asia I believe are considered one region for purposes of this system) in the winter. Canada hired former German league head coach Gord Hebert for this eventuality.

Obviously this format makes each game quite important. Even if you don't make the top 16 group - the classification round games have lots of value. The realistic goal for this team is to make it into a qualifier.

In a perfect world we host one of these 4 qualifiers in Toronto. I think we'd have a much higher participation rate from our top players if we were based in the GTA . Unfortunately the corporate support for Canada Basketball is virtually nil. What it would take is the Raptors/Drake ( OVO ) to backstop such an event. I don't know if this is even being contemplated? As Matt 97 points out such a tournament would not be a cake walk - there's lots of good European teams that won't qualify and will send strong squads to such an event.
