You guys in hk seem to think that you are under british rule.

You guys belong to a totalitarian socialist government now. These protests wont end well, the world will do nothing for you. Beijing could put all 7 million of you in maoist gulags and wont bat an eye. Look at what they are doing to the Uighurs.

Dont get this confused, these people so called cheering you on from the comfort of their western homes wont be in a torture cell next to you, they wont be in a gulag with you.

Stop messing with beijing. All you will accomplish by these process is speed up(not slow down) the mainlandification of H.K.

I don't think anyone is here with rose colored glasses. It is clear they want to fight and who are we to tell anyone not to fight for their freedom? All I can do is wish them luck really. I believe they are quite aware of the consequences and have decided to take the risk of resistance.
In my experiece, most westerners and especially white Americans are nieve to the realities of the non western world .

You are probably right about many people. I've never been to HK, but I've been to India three times so at least I've gotten out of the door on occasion. Not optimistic about the direction of that nation at the moment either, but that's another story.

To Blanko: Yes these youngsters are well assured that they are paying huge cost (freedom, time, future) to go for these fights. It is against dictatorship and some may even realize that Western society may do nothing after all. However people just do not want to lay down and accept defeat, yet. Or just become like the rest of that country called PRC. PRC propaganda is now declaring us as premature terrorists or individualism, bright words and they are trying to scare or fool around their own people. We are so far from that, but hey sometimes self-fulfilling prophecy works.

I know you are saying that out of worries, and thanks for that.

Clyde: Thanks for your continuous support. It is such a huge gamble against the strongest tyranny in the world. They have guns, money and those influence everywhere, that quite a portion of people around my age (I am 36 now) are considering moving to other countries. However it is so against my flavour. This superpower is just everywhere and all over the world. Unless I cut off all my roots, family, friends and everything I have built upon, otherwise there is simply no point doing so. These youngsters and all those people who have come out to demonstration, are giving me power during this time of struggle.

Honestly no idea how it will end, my wife keeps asking me this but I truly don't know.

I understand the desire to stay and fight, but if you have the means and decide it is time to leave I suggest you do what works for you and those closest to you and not have any shame about abandoning HK.

When you know you are in the middle of a major historical moment it is possible to be fully engaged without the full perspective about the consequences for your future on a heart level. You may know intellectually you are David vs. Goliath and are fighting perhaps enormous odds, but that is why parables like that exist, because sometimes David wins. The drama may keep you pulled into the events regardless of where it leads to in the future and you do need to take moments of complete alone time to contemplate your destiny in all of this.

However, if you feel you can afford to leave and know somewhere you can go to and re-establish yourself, it should be part of your calculations too. Many Jews should have left Germany, but they stayed behind because it was home. Nobody shakes a finger at them for leaving what turned into an oven.

So do the math and do what is best for you and your family in the end. One person can be a hero, but sometimes a family doesn't need a hero, they need a guardian. That's for you to decide, but if you stay and fight for your freedom I'll try to offer the little bit of moral support I can from this side of the world.

Good luck, Stay Safe

The cops are making their move on the HK Airport and busting heads and spraying tear gas now

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/12/world/asia/hong-kong-airport-protest.html

Bearing batons and pepper spray, Hong Kong riot police officers clashed with anti-government protesters who crippled the airport on Tuesday for the second straight day, chaos that underscored the deepening unrest gripping the city.

The mayhem at the airport — unprecedented in the Asian financial hub known for efficiency and order — came hours after mass protests forced the airport to suspend check-ins for the second consecutive day. The city’s embattled leader, Carrie Lam, had pleaded earlier for order after days of escalating street violence.

Thousands of demonstrators had occupied parts of Hong Kong International Airport’s departures and arrivals halls on Tuesday afternoon, with some using luggage trolleys to block travelers from reaching their departure gates. The Hong Kong Airport Authority later closed check-in services and advised all passengers to leave as soon as possible.

That is 100% accurate, and it is not something that goes away after a few visits to another country. I lived for 5 years in Asia and Americans are even behind other western civilizations (i.e. Aussies, Kiwis, Poms, etc). I believe distance is certainly a factor, as well as the American culture in general. We have our little bubble that far too many are unable to see outside of. Not to say our way of life isn't better in some ways, mostly our inability to see/understand the way things are elsewhere.

I also agree that HK is headed towards "mainlandification", it is in fact inevitable. I would be strongly considering relocation if that bothers you. Singapore would be my choice.

I would bet big against the PLA coming in to HK...They will not destroy the one source of much needed USD for China.

I also think the violence protests peaked on Tuesday night at the airport, the protests will continue strongly but more peacefully in the future.

Beijing realizes that they need to improve the conditions of the youth in HK and Financial Secratery Paul Chan is announcing a couple small measures to HKers.

They tried to cool down the momentum of protesters, but let's see how the demonstration goes on this Sunday.
