Re: FIBA WORLD CUP 2019

Post#2 » by UcanUwill » Mon Aug 19, 2019 7:29 pm

just wanted to grab FIBA world cup real estate, it became a tradition of mine to create an extravagant thread of FIBA tournaments on general board. I will update original post and try to complete all the rosters. We had FIBA related thread already, so if mods and other posters feel this thread is unnecessary, well, then lock it.

From teams that I watched, Serbia, Greece and Lithunia look legit good. Australia has been very underwhelming so far, and they lost Bolden (please inform me who replaces him so I could update the roster). France i havent seen, but their results are great, that team will be a defensive monster, just too bad Heurtel got injured, but its not a huge loss when you have Fournier and DeColo.

Lithuania's top performers are easy to predict, no surprise here.

On a sadder note, African team news were fested with nothing bad bad news and controversies, lots of teams are unfunded. Nigeria could even miss the tournament as news developing.

I think that my team Serbia has the best mix of talent and chemistry to dethrone the weakened USA team but we are still struggling to gel. Lithuania really played well together and i was impressed by their play. They dont really have the talent they used to have but I think that they are a dark horse to make some noise in the WC.

Serbia should absolutely be on the list, especially over Brazil or Australia.

Serbia is the obvious choice, with an superstar clearly better than any player of current USA WC2019 roster, 4 other NBA players, deep bench, a long tradition of international success (Serbia is a silver medalist at previous 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics games) and with players much more familiar to FIBA rules than Americans, and BTW, Serbia won so far all 7 preparation games, including road games vs strong Greece and Lithuania squads.

That said, I must inform you that unfortunately, not everything is so perfect for Serbia. Jokic was never used as point-center you know in NBA, much more like an old school center and even PF at time. Two players which everyone expected to see in Serbia roster in China, forward Kalinic and combo-guard Nedovic (Kalinic as a starter!) is cut from the team due to some strange coach/player issue and three other players including starting PG Teodosic are injured now (other two are forward Vladimir Lucic, and guard Dragan Milosavljevic).

Once the knockout phase starts (since quarterfinals) everything is possible because it is one single game. Just remember what happens in this season's NBA playoff which started with shocking upsets where Orlando beat Toronto and Brooklyn beat Philadelphia, and you will realize the difference between knockout games and playoff series where better teams are in a better position to prove that they are really better. But the most realistic scenario of 2019 World Cup is arguably USA-Serbia final, with the USA still being clear favorites thanks to backcourt lineup, depth, and the best coach. But nobody should be shocked if Serbia wins.

(DARK HORSE TEAM: France)

Yeah, the Kalinic/Nedovic cuts by Serbia seem really dumb and bizarre. Both proven high level contributors. Think the US will demolish their attempts at perimeter defense.

Ffs raduljica is serbias 3rd string centre. That would be far and away the best quality and depth at centre in the nba

This week Serbia embarrassed Italy by 30 and now just beat Greece w/o Jokic. They are for real.

Really looking forward to Serbia Greece matching up. Giannis is gonna go all out, jokic is jokic and bogdan is made for tournaments like these. It's gonna be intense!

They played yesterday in the pre-world cup Acropolis Tournament in Greece. Intense game that went to overtime. Jokic didn't play though. Bogie went off

Despite their recent loss to the US, I've got Spain for obvious reasons: past tourney performances, excellent coaching, and good-to-great players. I think we could see more turnover on the US side and more geling on the part of the Spaniards.

In the past one and a half decades, Spain not always reach the finals, not even semis at big tournaments, but was before the big events with the reason always considered as World's 2nd best team behind the USA (with all respect to my Serbia, or France, or Argentina all these years). With the retirement of Spain true leader through "Furia golden era" Pau Gasol and decline of his 34y old brother Marc, and withdraws of their both naturalized stars Ibaka and Mirotic, Spaniards finally lost that #2 status. They can reach final in China, they are still TOP5 team, but in terms of power ranking they are not #2 team anymore, and will not be anytime soon despite great depth. Looking forward, Serbia, France, and Canada are in a better starting position for the upcoming 2020+ decade than Spain, with Australia, Greece, and Lithuania very close.

I saw that Motum may not be available now as he already joined his team in Spain after not making the cut. Expect another NBL player at this point

Not even close. Milutinov is much better than Radjulia anyway. Jokic has a better backup than all three in Plumlee.

Agree. The seeding here may influence the final outcome/results... Certainly some teams are better positioned to advance than others.

Can't wait!

Nice, haven't seen milutinov play. Raduljica was one of their best players even with Jokic in the 2016 Olympics and I've been on his bandwagon ever since I watched him a few times for Partizan several years ago now.
