Shepherd has to make it at this point.

It seems like every year we have that one WR that has effectively shown nothing in the regular season and we pine for that receiver to be released in favor of some rookie WR who is doing well in camp. We almost always end up keeping the veteran unless injury gets in the way because that veteran is a known quantity and its the safer choice. I don't think that decision has really bit us in the butt yet.

To me the only locks are:

Adams
Allison
MVS
Kumerow

That leaves, at most, three spots on the active roster, with the following legit options.

EQ
Davis
Lazard
Moore
Shepherd

I think EQ is very close to being a lock. He flashed some talent last year and seemed to be on the same page with Aaron. I don't think he's gone.

So that leaves us with two more spots. I think J'Mon Moore is going to get cut because of his unreliable hands. Rodgers won't throw to him.

That leaves us with effectively two spots, and Davis/Lazard/Shepherd.

And if Shepherd shows himself to be a reliable KR/PR, I'm not sure why you'd even bother to keep Davis unless you're really, really high on his talent.

I would cut Davis and not think twice about it. Only reason I could see Gute keeping him, is that he is building the roster with speed in mind, and that is Davis' defining trait.

Davis stinks. Who cares if he shows straight line speed, that's almost irrelevant anymore. If you dont possess elite elusiveness and initial burst than you can run as fast as you want and its not gonna get you past NFL caliber players. Davis should've been cut 2 years ago IMHO. That straight line speed might look good in college against dudes that are now selling insurance policies but against NFL players, dudes like Davis should be the ones selling insurance.

Trevor Davis with another monster practice, and running with the 1s and 2s on offense -- not just on special teams. Kid's gonna make the roster. Either EQ or Shep is gonna get cut.

I want to see Davis in these upcoming preseason games. I'm by no means a fan of his, but by the sounds of it, he's been amazing all offseason/camp.

Davis has been active for 29 games and only has 8 catches.

I don't care if he levitates off the field in practice. He's done nothing when it counts.

Here is my beef with keeping Davis, he is in a contract year and I don't think he would really outproduce a guy like Shepherd at all. Could be wrong, but don't think I am.

I think it will come down to one of those two and then one of EQ, Moore or Lazard

You guys are missing the boat. Davis is finding his groove as a receiver this camp – particularly as a slot. He saidd he felt he has had far more opportunity to show his WR talent with LaFleur than he ever got with McCarthy. Considering how crappy McCarthy was at evaluating how to put a player in the position he can shine his most talent – Heywood, Hyde, Randall - it could be.
PLUS the field position game can make or break a game - even a team’s season. Davis was the Leagues top PR and also productive as KR. PLUS he was exceptional as a Gunner. Most teams do not have a good return guy they can count on – to even field a kick reliably much less be a consistent threat to break one.
I like Davis but if Shep keeps showing “it” in the remaining preseason games – I bet Pack could get a 5th round pick for Davis.
I really like EQ but no way Pack sneaks him onto PS. Either we carry 7 or we trade him for a 5th or 6th

I'm generally one that is "wait and see" and rarely has much for hot takes about players...

I have no idea what the appeal of Davis is. He looks like he weighs 165 lbs and is not anywhere close to the fastest player on the field, which you're supposed to be if you're that small.

WR to start the season -
rank-name-position

#1 Adams - any-all
#2 Alison - slot- outside
#3 MVS - outside
#4 Kumerow - slot
#5 Lazzard - outside
#6 Sheperd - slot, PR, KR

trade Davis for 5th
trade EQ for 6th (or carry 7 WRs)
Waive Moore - he will be claimed but if he isn't put him on PS.
OR
place (stash) him on IR

I doubt they can get a 5th maybe a 7th if some team really wants a return guy.

I do agree that McCarthy didn't always use guys the best and so maybe something is there with him on O. One would think there's a few plays you could utilize his skill set.

It won't break my heart if they cut him but I'd understand if he made the team. NFL coaches are conservative by nature so having a guy who they know can field a kick/punt plus be a starting gunner is something they value vs the unknown.
