After struggling in his debut with Buffalo, Anthony Kay has been quite good in his last 5 starts:

28.2 IP
17 H
4 ER (1.26 ERA)
16 BB
33 SO (10.36 K/9)

Everything’s looking good except the walks.

I was beginning to think even a couple weeks ago that Kay was the key (in a sense) to this deal for us. We got that vital high-risk high-reward arm that I think this team needed to acquire in SWR. We needed to roll the dice on high end talent that's a ways away without guarantee. But if Kay can prove himself to be something, he both protects us against a total bust trade and also sets us up for a potential big win.

Also, he only walked two tonight. And one was the last batter he faced, with two outs in the 7th, on a full count. So hopefully that’s a step in the right direction, too.

If anyone is interested, the Vancouver Canadians' game tonight is on Sportsnet Pacific which some Rogers customers in the GTA and elsewhere have in their TV packages. Adam Kloffenstein is the scheduled starter. It's a 10:05 start in the eastern time zone

Given how critical I have been of Conine's approach, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that he's striking out less and walking more of late. Including tonight, his last 10 games feature 10 Ks* and 12 BBs, good for a 23.3% K rate. He's in a homer drought, which may or may not be related, but having your homer droughts offset by a .500+ OBP is not bad.

Leonardo Jimenez is red hot. 11 hits in his last five games. He doesn’t get talked about as much, but he seems to be having a solid season. He’s really young, so hopefully he can add some power as he gets older. Just turned 18 in May.

The last few regular season games plus playoffs for Dunedin have been cancelled because of the approaching Hurricane Dorian. So no championship for the organization, although Dunedin led its division in both halves of the season.

SWR: 5 IP, 2 hits (both singles), 0 ER, 3 Ks, 0 walks.
Hatch: 5 IP, 2 hits, 2 ER, 10 Ks, 0 BBs.

I remember when ranking our prospects consisted of "the really good one", followed by "the two pretty good ones that I have doubts about" followed by "I don't know take your pick".

Anyway, Woods Richardson threw five more scoreless innings tonight with 2H, 0BB and 3K

I guess it’s safe to say Woods Richardson will start next season in AA as a 19 year old?

Riley Adams has had a pretty solid season this year, imo. But gets overlooked because of all the catching depth.

Hatch may prove to be a good example of what a bad team can do trading an over-30 reliever having a modestly successful return from injury, signed on a one year deal almost expressly to be traded at the deadline if he was still able to walk and chew gum at the same time. Hatch was the Cubs 3rd round pick in 2016, didn't pitch until 2017, seems to have found a comfort zone in the Blue Jays org - maybe it's because of bigger opportunity. His walk rate is down since the trade, he's had only two base on balls in six starts. He's been a starter exclusively, but profiles well as a middle reliever - he's certainly stretched out. I'm not sure if he is Rule 5 eligible, but that may be one reason the Cubs made him available.

His final line tonight: 7IP, 3H, 2R, 2ER, 0BB, 11K, 95 pitches (67 strikes), GO/AO 7-1

I'd guess that he starts the year in Dunedin, with a possible May/early June promotion track. AA would be crazy-aggressive, though not outside the realm of possibility.

I think they would start him at DUN to up his pitch count and get him past five innings. Wouldn't shock me if he made it to NH or even BUF at some point next season.

My guess if he keeps dominating:

2020 - Dun (1/3), NH (2/3)
2021 - Buff (1/2 to 2/3), Tor (1/3 - 1/2)

That'd still have him in the majors before his 21st birthday.

Very reasonable timeline. Another few Dunedin pitchers likely to get to NH next season

Maximo Castillo ended the season strongly with an 11-5 record, 2.69 ERA, WHIP of 1.10, and while not a top 30 prospect, is still just 20. In August, he was 4-0, with a 1.52 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, .200 OBA, only two walks in 23 innings.

Josh Winckowski, 21, had a 3.19 ERA and 1.21 WHIP at DUN after a promotion from Lansing.

Reliever Jackson Rees also got a midseason promotion and finished the season as the Dunedin closer. He's 25. He had 88 strikeouts in 61 innings, a 0.99 ERA at Dunedin and 9-10 in SV/SVO after an 0.36 ERA at Lansing where he was 7-7 in save opportunities.

Good news is Conine ended the HR drought yesterday. Bad news he went 1-4 with 3k.

The day MLB springs for ball-tracking in all of their parks will be a good day indeed. I'd love to know what Williams' velo is like after his post-draft break, but it'll probably be a full three months before we have credible accounts.
