I'm trying to understand the overall impetus for certain aspects of FIBA WC like points accumulation and the inclusion of teams from around the world even though they are comparatively weak. I can see for the latter the point of inclusion so that the game grows, and the competition being relative to the region before going on to a bigger stage. It's imperfect for many reasons mentioned here, but has the potential to grow the game in the long run. What I don't get in a tournament like this is that in the first round some good teams happen to draw the much less competitive ones and then that exaggerated point differential (or total points scored versus weak competition) gets carried over to the next round, yes? What is its purpose? Does the point differential break a tie should two teams have the same record? Seems like a huge imbalance that needs addressing if so.
