Bodes well for the knockout rounds.

The USA literally 5 of the best players in the world sitting out. It's not even remotely close.

That's USA basketball federation problem , it doesn't concern other NT's nor they will be sorry for the USA.

It really is kind of sad that American NBA players have so little pride in representing their country.

The only reason they probably even bother turning up to the Olympics is because of the other hot female athletes and to hang around with other famous athletes for Instagram photos. Couldn't care less about representing their country at the game of basketball.

Some info clarifying the whole points differential carry over to the second round. I still think this is an unbalanced method, but here it is:

Double group stage tournament? I had no idea it was this complicated.

I think it's actually a triple group stage tournament. On each pass through the game you played against the team that passes through with you continues to count. So you just play 2 new games in the 2nd and 3rd groups. Which means that if the US and Turkey both advance to the 2nd round (as expected) the US-Turkey result would continue to count in the later groups. So if the US lost to Turkey they'd be 1 loss away from likely being out even starting the 2nd group.

After the 3 round of group stage play 4 teams are left for a straight semi-finals then finals. Span and Serbia are pretty much guaranteed to get there from the easy half but the US will have to play several teams better then Turkey to get there.

This is so weird... like I know it's scola, but he looks a lot different without the long hair. You'd think it was his older brother or something :o

This is him only 2 years ago!

Hmm...based on the website it looks like the quarterfinals will be a bracket and not a third group. I still don't like it. Seems very unfair to carry over wins and point differential from the group stages.

Just spent 10 minutes looking for the game, figuring it had to be on somewhere. Couldn’t even clear out some early morning space on one of ESPN’s 53 real channels. Kind of sums up where the World Cup is at, I suppose.

Yeah, the US isn't taking this seriously really. Although I'm not following every second of it.

That is perfectly fine. Because if you have tiebrakers, point differential considered is only among those teams

The Philippines wasted a lot of valuable seconds here by failing to foul quickly.

It pretty much always happens in FIBA competitions... I don't remember how the Olympics go, but the Euro Championship and World championship work like this for a long time now

And that goes not only for basketball, but for handball and volleyball too, for example. Pretty common system.

Odd on Serbia vs Italy is 1.07.

I mean, I know that we are good but are we that better? Italy got pretty solid team.

Serbia absolutely destroyed in their previous 2 games, that's why the odds are so low. I got -12,5 myself, should be ez.

We had big lead in 2nd friendly game and they cut it and took a lead in 4qt. We won eventually, but relaxing was a problem in that game.
