At last: The US arrives in China for the World Cup
After a month of practice and years of planning, the U.S. men’s basketball team has arrived at the World Cup.

An all-night flight from Sydney to Shanghai that landed early Thursday brought the two-time defending World Cup champion Americans to China’s most-populous city, where they’ll play three first round games starting Sunday. It took more than 10 hours of flying time, then another two-plus hours for the team to clear customs and finally reach its hotel.

Players said finally getting to China brought a different feel.

“It’s kicked in,” U.S. guard Kemba Walker of the Boston Celtics said after practice. “The next game we play, it’s the real thing. We’re focused, we’re locked in and we’re ready to play.”

It’s not like there hasn’t been challenges already. Just consider the travel itineraries for the U.S. to this point.

The flights from Los Angeles to Melbourne, then Melbourne to Sydney and now Sydney to Shanghai add up to nearly 30 hours and 14,000 miles in the air. If the U.S. makes the medal round, there’ll be about another 2,500 miles of travel within China. Add the return flight to the U.S. after the tournament, and the trip’s total will easily exceed 22,000 miles — more than half a regular season’s worth of travel for most NBA teams.

All that flying comes in the span of basically a month.

And that doesn’t even count what it took for players to individually reach Las Vegas and Los Angeles, the site of the two training camp weeks, or the promotional trip to China that Donovan Mitchell made earlier this summer.

Up next on Sunday is the Czech Republic, an opponent that caught Popovich’s eye for the way it battled Lithuania in a pre-World Cup friendly.

“We don’t take anybody lightly,” Popovich said.

Popovich noted that there hadn’t been much time for sightseeing on the opening day in Shanghai, and it wouldn’t seem that it’ll be a priority over the next week either. There’s more practices set for Friday and Saturday, then games starting every other day beginning with the matchup against the Czechs.

“We have a great team of guys, very unselfish group,” Bucks center Brook Lopez said before the team left Australia. “We all have the same goal in mind. A lot of young guys, so we have a lot of guys who are learning on the fly. We don’t have a problem being a team. Our guys have come together really quick.”

And now, with the trip to the other side of the world finally complete, the games now count.

“That’s the way it is,” Popovich said.

Quotes
Gregg Popovich (USA and San Antonio Spurs head coach)
It’s your first day in Shanghai, what do you think about it?
We just got here today and haven’t had a chance to walk around, look around, but from what we have seen, the people have been wonderful in the hotel and out on the street. Everybody loves basketball it seems to me. It seems pretty popular. So, so far it’s been great.

You place high value on team unity and chemistry of this team, what do you think about the atmosphere and chemistry of the team right now?
Well, they’re getting to know each other day by day, better and better. It’s a good high-character group. They’re very motivated, very coachable, so they’ve been a lot of fun to be with, and they’re getting better all the time....

Where are you in the process of still working on comradery and figuring out what you want to do versus putting in a game plan for Sunday?
You do both. It’s not an either or. They’re not mutually exclusive. You build comradery all the time. If it was a regular NBA season, you could be in the 58th game and your still building comradery. Here you have to do that a little bit quicker, obviously. But a lot of that depends on character, and their character is high, and they understand they have a big challenge ahead of them and they’re serious about it. I couldn’t be happier about the progress they’ve made....

Your first game is against Czech Republic, how much do you know about this team?
The Czech Republic is a very good team. They just played a really good game against Lithuania, which has been an experienced, fine executing team for a very long time. They’re big. Their sets that they run are very good, so the challenges begin with game one, and that’s the way it is.

Do you feel like your offense is ahead of your defense or vice-versa at this point?
It is what it is, I don’t know. We’re just working on both. Coaches never feel good about anything. We’re sick people.

Joe Harris (Brooklyn Nets)
How does the team feel now that you actually are in China?
This is do or die now. There is no more exhibitions, no more mulligans at it. We talked about how important every single possession is in the FIBA game. You have forty minutes of – you can turn the ball over, can’t have careless mental mistakes. All that stuff is out the window. That’s why we had the three or four exhibition games that we had leading up to it, was to get work those kinks out of the way, work the mental mistakes out of the way. Now, it’s forty minutes of being locked in, trying to play perfect basketball.

We have enough depth on this team on this roster that guys are going to be cycling in and playing maximum effort whenever you are on the court and trying to make the most of your time out there.

Donovan Mitchell (Utah Jazz)
What is it like to be around this coaching staff and these players and how has it made you better?
Learning from coaches like Pop, Steve Kerr, Coach (Lloyd) Pierce, Coach (Jay) Wright from Villanova. I think being able to take certain things from each coach, whether it’s pay attention to detail to even how to come off a screen, or how to lead a team, or how to become a better defensive player. In trying to take my game to the next level, this definitely helps. Being around guys like Mason (Plumlee), like Kemba (Walker). Kemba’s a guy I grew up watching my entire life. So, being able to be on the same team and just pick his brain a little bit. Another guy, Khris Middleton, Harrison Barnes, guys who’ve done it for a long period of time and had success have definitely helped me for sure....

Kemba Walker (Boston Celtics)
Do you like the fact that there is doubt out there about this team?
We don’t pay attention. That’s a done deal at this point. A lot of us have grown up with doubt coming into our careers. It’s nothing new to us. That’s unnecessary at this point. Nobody really cares what people think. At the end of the day, we want to win. We have one goal: we want to win. We want to win a gold medal. It’s going to take game-by-game. There are really good teams in this tournament. At the end of the day, we want to be here. We’re the ones who took on this opportunity to play for our country and represent our country. Who cares about the outside noise at this point? It really doesn’t matter.

Practice 2 - Concordia International School Shanghai, Shanghai, China:

Interview

Quotes
Gregg Popovich (USA and San Antonio Spurs head coach)
How much does it add to the challenge when you try to figure out rotations with a shorter game, does that take some getting used to?
It does actually, that’s a good point. You know in a 48 minute game, you pretty much know how to get everybody in, or the people you want to get in anyway. Here you have to make some decisions, because everybody may not play. It’s impossible to give everybody the minutes they would like to have, but like I said, guys with character understand that. It’s just about winning. It’s not about minutes, or points or any of that stuff. So, everyone knows that they’ll have maybe a different role than they do in the NBA, and that they’re going to play fewer minutes than they did in the NBA.

You’ve been talking about comradery for your team and other teams since this started a month ago or whatever it was, has that been one of your top priorities?
Absolutely. You have to enjoy being with people to feel responsible for them. To be accountable to each other, you have to have some sort of an empathetic bond. You have to love each other to a degree, or that stuff doesn’t blossom, and I think they’ve done a great job of that. They went out by themselves. They didn’t want to see any coaches or anybody else, they just went and had dinner last night and enjoyed an evening together. That sort of thing is important....

FIBA has different basketball rules. What’s your message to the players about the different styles?
Well, from day one we’ve talked to them about that and run drills in Las Vegas and in Los Angeles and in Australia to try to form some habits, so they would know that things are different, but that’s all that we can do. So, we’re aware of it, we’ve worked on it and we’ll see if we can follow through once the games begin.

You have Steve Kerr back as an assistant coach. Do you sometimes have disagreements about the rotation or style of play?
I don’t think disagreements. There’s a lot of great coaches out here that are very accomplished and have done well, so we have discussions. We don’t really have disagreements. It’s not one coach, it’s not me or anybody else who has the day so to speak or has his way. We are all looking at this group and seeing what is best for them. It’s not what we individually believe but what’s best for them, and we’ve come to that agreement.

Harrison Barnes (Sacramento Kings)
On playing for this team:
… Opportunity to come play for your country, compete with these guys, get better. And the opportunity to be coached by a guy like coach Pop, who’s one of the greatest coaches in NBA history, and maybe in all sports history … I just want to make the most out of the opportunity.

How much are you thinking about other teams at this point?
Before every game, that’s the focus. You think about Czech. That’s the focus. You’re not thinking about Turkey. You’re not thinking about Japan. Even though those games are scheduled, it’s one game at a time. And I think what we learned from exhibition, part of it, is that you can’t afford to have any lapses.

Have you talked to the other guys what it’s like to play on an Olympic or World Cup stage?
Oh yeah, for sure. It’s totally different. Some of these guys, they have gold medals at a different stage of their career, but when you get to the World Cup, when you get to the Olympics, having teammates that are international, you see how important it is for them. We in the States, we equate an NBA Championship, that’s how the equate the World Cup medal. Any medal. Because that is how much pride, how much joy they take from their countries and the fact that they played with their team for four, five, six, seven plus years. There is a different type of bias. As opposed to some of us, we got the call in June to come out and play and go from there. I think it is a big difference from the U18s, the U19s, whatever it might be to this.

Myles Turner (Indiana Pacers)
What have you thought of Shanghai so far?
It’s a dope city. I’ve been able to walk around a little bit. I’ve never been to China. It’s my first time in China, so it’s a great first stop. It’s pretty cool.

What are the things you are focusing on the most at practice?
Defense is big for us. We’re working on our defense. Working on being together and communication. Those are the biggest points we’re working on.

Are you getting to the anxious point where you just want to play games?
Definitely so. It’s a long little break between games, but once we get going, we’ll be rolling.

What are your expectations about your first opponent, the Czech Republic?
The thing about them is, we just got to be able to come in there and lock in and focus on the guys we don’t know as well. That’s the biggest thing about FIBA. You know the guys that play in the league, but it’s the guys that you don’t see play every day who make an impact. So, you have to figure out who those guys and lock in on their roles.

In between practices in China, the team has continued to bond on the bus and during dinners. A little Heads Up goes a long way.

With the beginnings of this FIBA WC journey upon us, a look into what leading Team USA means to Pop:

For Gregg Popovich, leading USA Basketball is a true calling
Even now, U.S coach Gregg Popovich remains a military man.

Nearly a half-century after his graduation from the U.S. Air Force Academy, it hasn’t been uncommon in recent San Antonio Spurs offseasons for Popovich to return for workouts on the wooded trails of that campus in Colorado. He’d be gasping thin air found at 7,700 feet above sea level, lungs heaving, mind racing.

As a student, he’d go there to think. As a graduate, he’s done the same.

“What you learn there is to get over yourself,” said Popovich, a five-time NBA champion coach with the Spurs. “It’s not about you.”

The Air Force Academy taught Popovich to focus on the current mission. Right now, and that’s guiding the U.S. to gold in the World Cup.

“Pop is completely locked in on this one thing,” USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo said. “He understands what the goal is, what we’re playing for here....”

“For a number of reasons, but ultimately the way he talks about us having these three U-S-A letters across our chest, we know what this means to him,” U.S. guard Joe Harris of the Brooklyn Nets said. “He obviously has a tremendous amount of pride and respect for his country and you can feel it in how he goes about his business. This isn’t something he’s just doing for the hell of it.”

Popovich took a few weeks to formally accept Colangelo’s invitation in 2015 to replace Krzyzewski in this cycle as national team coach for the World Cup and next year’s Olympics in Tokyo.

The delay probably wasn’t needed.

From the outset, Popovich felt compelled to jump at the chance to serve again.

“It’s impossible to separate it if you have been in the military,” Popovich said. “I’ve had classmates that have fought in wars — I have not — and some of them are no longer with us. You get an appreciation for people who have sacrificed. So when you have an opportunity to do this for your country, it’s impossible to say no. I love being part of it.”

The USA converted 15 Czech Republic turnovers into 22 points, and the Americans committed just seven turnovers for the game.

The first quarter saw both teams make runs. The USA jumped out to a 5-0 lead and was up 7-2 before Czech put together nine unanswered points to go ahead 11-7 at 5:17. Eleven U.S. players saw minutes in the first quarter, and six put points on the board.

The USA came out in full force to start the second period, and the quarter essentially was the difference in the game. Quotes
Harrison Barnes (Sacramento Kings)
What is the one thing you want to take away from tonight’s game?
Just being resilient. It’s not going to happen all at one time. It’s going to take some time. Guys are going to get hot. There are going to be sometimes when things aren’t going your way, but we need to have poise and stick with it....

How did you guys become so cohesive defensively so fast?
Just taking ownership of it. Defensively, that’s something that no matter what you’re doing, it’s energy. It’s the communication. It’s the commitment to, ‘I’m going to do my job, so I have my teammate’s back. I have my brother’s back if he messes up.’ That’s what we’re all trying to take ownership of.

Jayson Tatum (Boston Celtics)
How did the team play today?
We did pretty well. We won. That’s what’s matters at the end of the day, as long as we win. We did well – some things we can improve on. But, it feels good to get that first win.

How did this team become so cohesive defensively so quickly?
From day one, we understood that’s what’s going to help us win the gold medal, is our defense. So, if we lock in and stay focused for forty minutes as much as we can on the defensive end, we are giving ourselves a great chance every night.

On the USA’s balanced scoring:
We got so many talented guys. Nobody is playing 38 minutes. We are all spreading the wealth and contributing equally. We all know, as long as we win, that’s all that matters. We don’t care who has the most points, who has the least points. All that people care about is winning at the end of the day. So, as long as we win, everybody is going to be happy.

How important is it to have Harrison Barnes and his experience?
Very, very important, especially his veteran leadership, somebody who has been here before. Everybody is contributing.

Myles Turner (Indiana Pacers)
Can you talk about the team bonding?
It’s been huge, everywhere. Everywhere we go, we kind of do everything together. I think this team has built a really good bond off the floor. Camaraderie is great. We are all playing for one another. I don’t think there is one guy on this team that’s selfish. We all kind of pulling for each other to make the right play, so I think it’s great.

USA Fights Off Turkey in Thrilling 93-92 Overtime Win
In a hard fought game that needed extra minutes before it was decided, the USA (2-0) battled its way to a 93-92 overtime victory against Turkey (1-1) at the 2019 FIBA World Cup on Tuesday night at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center in Shanghai, China.

The win ensured the USA will advance to the medal second round out of Group E.

Down 81-79 with 12.3 to go in regulation, Kemba Walker (Boston Celtics) secured an offensive rebound, and Jayson Tatum (Boston Celtics) was fouled on a 3-point shot with 0.1 seconds. Tatum made 2-of-3 free throws to tie the game. Turkey did not get off a final shot in regulation on the inbound with 0.1 seconds, and the game went into overtime.

Turkey scored first in overtime, and then each side hit back-to-back 3s, and the score was 89-87 Turkey with 2:52 to play. Walker tied the game, and Tatum stole the ball and scored to put the USA ahead 91-89 with 1:58 to go.

Turkey’s Cedi Osman converted a three-point play to push Turkey ahead 92-91 with 50.1 seconds, and the USA’s put-back on the next possession was waved off for basket interference. Turkey was called for an offensive foul on its next possession, and the USA got the ball in the front court with 14.6 to play after a timeout. But, Turkey stole the ball, and the USA was forced to foul with 9.0 left. Turkey’s Dogue Balbay missed both free throws but got the ball back as the foul was called as unsportsmanlike.

The USA again fouled, and Osman missed both of his free throw attempts. Tatum secured the rebound, drove the floor and found Khris Middleton (Milwaukee Bucks), who was fouled on his attempt and made both free throws to give the USA the 93-92 lead.

Turkey called a timeout to advance the ball past half court with 2.1 seconds and missed a well defended final 3-point attempt.

The USA led 10-2 to start the game, but Turkey closed the period by outscoring the USA 13-10 to cut the lead to 26-21 at the first quarter break.

After scores from both sides to start the second quarter, the USA put together an 8-0 run and took its largest lead of the game 41-26. Turkey responded with 12 unanswered points, including a four-point play, and the score was 41-38 with 2:46 before the half. After a 3-pointer from Barnes and points from Middleton and Walker, the USA lead was 47-42 at halftime.

Turner had 11 points and seven rebounds for the USA at the midway point, while Turkey’s Ersan Ilyasova, who finished with 23 points, had 15 of those by halftime.

The third quarter saw Turkey come within one point, 53-52 at 4:47 after a 6-0 run. The USA ended the streak, but the margin was still one point, 62-61, with 4.2 seconds on the clock. The USA inbounded the ball, and Walker pulled up and sank a deep 3 to beat the buzzer and make it 65-61 with 10 minutes remaining.

Turkey tied the game at 71-all with a 3-pointer at 6:00 in the fourth quarter, but Walker sank a free throw and Harris stole the ball and scored to put the USA on top 74-71. Turkey sank a 3 out of its time out, which Donovan Mitchell (Utah Jazz) answered to make it 77-74 in the USA’s favor. After going up 79-74 following a score from Middleton, Turkey sank a 3 and scored twice to take its first lead of the game 81-79 with 12.3 seconds. That is when Tatum’s free throws put the game into overtime....

The red, white and blue shot just 35.1% from the field (27-77 FGs) but was 25-of-32 from the free throw line (.781) and won the rebounding battle 51-46, including scoring 18 second-chance points.

Quotes
Harrison Barnes (Sacramento Kings)
What can the USA do better?
Keep the ball moving. A lot of times we get stagnant, passing the ball around the perimeter and just getting 3-point shots. I think getting some movement towards the basket, attacking seams, that’s going to open things up for us. Tonight, we celebrate.

Donovan Mitchell (Utah Jazz)
How physical was this game?
Extremely. I got a text from my former teammate Ricky Rubio, and he said, ‘Welcome to FIBA’. It’s really physical, but I think we enjoyed it. It’s what we signed up for. We wouldn’t want it any other way.

What side was it more physical, them setting screens or them contesting shots?
I think a little bit of both. I think we could have done a much better job on ball on defense. When we played Czech Republic, we were into their guards a little bit more. As guys started to get a little tired, we started to lay back, giving them shots that we weren’t letting them get at the beginning of the game. I think it’s really on us, as well, being able to take up space. That way we don’t get hit on screens. I’m getting hit. Kemba’s getting hit. Guys are getting hit that normally don’t. I think that comes with knowing each other. Games like this help you grow in that sense.

Myles Turner (Indiana Pacers)
On the game:
There’s a lot you can say. One hell of a game, man. Everybody stepped up at the end. Everybody stepped up all game. We all had each other’s back. And, this is one of those games we hang our hats on and not be satisfied with, but know that we are battle tested.

What helped the USA?
I think the biggest thing that helped us this game was staying together. I think that game could have gone either way. I think we all stayed together down the stretch, and that’s what helped us win.
