I voted for Spain and looked at the result and was shocked at the amount of people that didn't vote Spain.

MrSparkle wrote:For whatever it’s worth, I really think people are putting too much stock into big names and ignoring the types of players and teams that excel in FIBA competitions. You need a scoring PG who can drain contested 3Ps with confidence (which Serbia doesn’t have). Who knows if Spain wins this game without Rubio pulling off some shots he regularly never does.
But more importantly, since about 2000, lumbering big men have been at a disadvantage in international games. Boban and Jokic are horrible defensive options for the pace of FIBA. Most these foreign starters couldn’t make the NBA because they’re undersized and don’t have the athleticism to make up for it. But in the international game there’s a hell of a lot more ball movement, so that overcomes whatever limitations Scola or Campazzo have.
People forget that this whole 3P bombing run and gun offense was a Euro thing that found itself in the NBA a decade later. Where’d D’Antoni coach before Phoenix (Italy)? What was Sarunas doing with Lithuania (launching 3Ps at a wonky rate and challenging USA)... 20 years ago.
You need your FIBA center to move quickly, because the 3P shots and quick cuts and passes to the basket will kill you. Offensively, there’s too much swarm in the paint to body and post up. No surprise that Spain was more lethal with Pau Gasol as the main guy, not Marc... a guy who could do equal damage from distance and close, and quick enough to beat perimeter defenders off the dribble.
The underathletic guys don’t generally do well in the NBA because they’re forced to stand and watch in iso sets while the top options ball hog. So they’re biggest weakness is hyper exposed as they need to wait for split second loose balls to make plays, which benefits less skilled athletes much more.
But anyway... Jokic has surpassed all expectations as an NBA superstar but make no mistake, he can’t bring what works for him in Denver to FIBA and expect it to work. He needs to speed up his decision making and 3P accuracy. And the team needs to figure out a defensive scheme for him to work. I don’t know if it was a great idea not having him build chemistry with the starters in the 1st rd. And they need a PG who can rain 3Ps (biggest problem).
I agree. Let's not forget we got Teodosic who is great 3pt shooter. He was much needed to today. Agree with you on lot of things. Boban was today -8 in 2:28min spent on a court. He was -6 vs Spain in 1:30min. Combined -14 in 4min with him on a court this two games is crazy.

Campazzo is a dog. He is not scared of anybody. I remember watching him play with Doncic in Real Madrid. He is arrogant, persistent and can play. Ofcourse he will have games where he just bricks everything and plays hero ball, but all in all he is a good player.

Because a lot of people did not expect the renew of Spain, and Serbia was on the good path (until Teodosic's injury, but easy to Say this now)
The thing I do not understand is "how Greece could be a Big threat for team USA". Ok Giannis is the best player in the NBA, Printezis is a correct player etc ... But this team could not challenge atheticism of USA (Australia, Spain, France, Serbia and maybe Lituanie could do it)
Actually I am happy that France play USA tomorrow instead of Spain, and I don't imagine Spain screwing up like France against Australia (I watched the game a 2nd Time this morning, and France really stopped to defend).
I Hope France-Spain for final!

Hats off to Luis Scola, still bringing it 15 years after a 2004 Olympic Gold Medal and victory over a LBJ/Duncan/Carmelo/Wade/Iverson USA Olympic team.

This Argentina squad(minus Scola) lost at home against a bunch of G leaguers. JVG is a great coach but still...
To be fair, that G-League team also CRUSHED the Team USA WC team in a scrimmage leading up to this tournament. Apparently JVG was loving it, as he coached the G-league team in the scrimmage as well, and was laughing like a maniac on the sidelines.

The Hernangomez brother finally came out to play for Spain today. Both were awesome.
Rubio has a step-back three now that's actually pretty money.

He brought it to Jokic, even blocked him in a fourth quarter right at the basket.

Great win for Argentina
So many people who attain the heights of power in this culture—celebrities, for instance—have to make a show of false humility and modesty, as if they got as far as they did by accident and not by ego or ambition.

Funny how perception changes when you're no longer playing the Philippines or Angola...
Did anyone really say this is the greatest European team ever? Who would say such thing, when Yugoslavia combined the best players of Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Slovenia, and Montenegro?

And he played the final match against Yugoslavia in Indianapolis 2002 World Cup
The last season he played in NBA years ago he was soooo slow... like a player next to retire...he start a diet and improve his physical and body. With his work ethic, competitiveness (he compete in every international tournament included panamerican sports recently) and talent, at his age is playing in a great level.

Well then...
i was wrong. i have no problem admitting it. are you feeling better now that you finally got to quote me again?
I just quoted you because you were oblivious to the fact that the 08-12 Spain side had proven to be really successful, thus there was a lot more evidence for their greatness compared to that of the Serbian national team. You didn’t deliver any and even claimed this Serbian team would’ve challenged our best/better national teams more than the golden generation of Spain. That was simply a little too much.

It's obvious now Serbia was overrated. I don't even know where players like Jovic, Lucic, Micic played last season and I have watched some EL games.
With Serbia out, teams like France and Argentina can still give a trouble to USA team, so still an interesting tournament.

I can see you watched for sure. Micic played Euroleague final and was best player of Efes whole season. He wasn't expected to play at tournument at all because his mother was sick, but after injuries of Teodosic and Milosavljevic he stayed with a team to help. His mother died yasterday.
Something was wrong with Serbia last two games. Then not using Milutinov at all and he was one of the best players in Olympiacos and one of the best centers in Euroleague. He was angry after game vs Italy. If there was some problems inside the team it will come out in next few days.
Really sad for Micic tho, thank you for staying with national team you strong guy.

U know why it's better we lost... We now have to beat Argentina, probably USA in the semis and than win in the finals to win it all
So if we have won today, everybody would say we had the easiest path to the gold ever and similar
