Is Marc Gasol a Hall of Famer?

Post#1 » by Imon » Sun Sep 15, 2019 4:41 pm

I know he often gets lost in the shadow of his older brother, Pau, but Marc has had himself a pretty impressive career - in the US and internationally.

NBA Champ (as a role player)
NBA DPOY
2x all NBA selection
3x all star selection
2x Olympic silvers
other international achievements

Do you think he is a HoFer on his NBA achievements alone or even his international achievements alone or a combination of both?

I don't think it's sealed by any chance, but I think he has solid options.

His NBA career alone wouldn't be close to enough, but he's had a pretty stellar international career.

Also, with respect to him being "a role player" in Toronto's championship, I disagree. He was the 3rd most important player on that team and IMO had they not traded for him, they wouldn't had won the Championship.

If Bosh is in, Marc should as well.

IMO both does not deserve it.

I like Marc but his rebounding was/ is so poor for his size and mediocre at boxing out as far as I can recall. I’ll take him 8 days a week over Yao Ming though my God.

He is hof 100%. World champion and nba champion in the same year. Remember: it’s not nba hof.
And he is a great human being.

Two times FIBA World Champion must be mentioned, and he is not role player in Toronto. He was a starter, and key defensively player which makes a nightmare of 2019 playoff for Orlando, Philadelphia, Milwaukee, and GSW bigs.

So... yes!

Gasol was a key part of that NBA championship....don't try to discredit him by labeling him as just a "role player". Without Gasol the Raptors don't even get past the Sixers

Combo of both easily
International alone probable
NBA alone questionable

It's the basketball hall of fame - so yeah probably. This isn't a slight against Gasol (who was very important to the Raptors this year)... just saying that the bar for the basketball HoF isn't that high compared to some other HoFs

He was also a key offensive player. Without his passing and ability to create the Raptors would have had a much harder time on offense - Gasol opened up the court for everyone with his playmaking alongside Lowry.

Yao was a great C and had his career sadly cut short by injury. Essentially played just 7 seasons, 7x All-Star and 5x All-NBA. Held his own against Shaq and dominated Dwight. Plus he may have done more for the global popularity of basketball than any player since Jordan. Easy HOF in my book.

He shouldn’t be, but they tend to have very low standards for anyone with any international experience (*cough Vlade Divac *cough)

It was debatable before this year, but winning a chip and another fiba cements it for me.

Well the international committee just voted in Vlade Divac and Gasol has had a far more impressive career.

That’s really all people need to know here. It’s not even a worthy debate at this point.

I dont get how so many people believe in the raptors, they have zero to chance to win it all.

i never get why people find this expression so poignant.
It would make sense if it was called the Hall of Great, and you changed it to the Hall of Very Good. But it's called the Hall of Fame. So if we're taking it at name value, any famous basketball player should get in. I'm not saying that's necessarily the definition, but the constant use of this "hall of very good" joke, doesn't make any sense or create productive discussion.

Marc Gasol is a basketball legend. One of the best players (and sometimes best) on the best national team outside the USA over the past 20 years. Arguably the best overall player from an iconic NBA team: the Grit n' Grind Grizzlies (all due respect to Z-Bo and Conley who are also in the argument). One of the best defensive players of his era. Despite his DPOY I think he's underrated on this end. Post dudes literally cannot score on him (ask Vooch, Embiid and Jokic how to score on a 34 year old Gasol), and he's the only big center that can't be run off the floor (he appears slow, but he's a genius who moves his feet just well enough to bother everyone with his giant arms). Outside of Jokic, he's probably the best passing Center any of us have watched play. If you're into decade cutoffs, Marc Gasol can make a very solid argument for best center of the decade (this is a sad contest though where you choose between the last few years of Dwight's prime or half a decade of Tim Duncan).

This isn't the NBA Hall of Fame. It's the basketball Hall of Fame. In the past few months, Marc Gasol won an NBA championship and a world cup, as a critical contributor to both teams. This is after a long career of winning a ton of games all over the world. Marc Gasol is a basketball legend, and the Basketball Hall of Fame is where you put Basketball legends.
