Iman Shumpert Declines Contract Offer From Rockets

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Sep 17, 2019 2:54 pm

Iman Shumpert has declined a contract offer from the Houston Rockets after several months of negotiations.

Shumpert will not attend an unofficial team minicamp in Las Vegas this week.

Shumpert finished last season with the Rockets following his trade from the Sacramento Kings.

As a Knicks fan, I thought everything we paid him was too much. I'm not sure the Rockets will feel bad about losing him to China, and there Shump can be a big fish in a small pond. Good luck to him - never hated him, never really liked having him on our team.

I liked Shumpert his rookie year. I never looked at him like he was a sure-fire all star or anything but I definitely saw his potential as a combo guard that can play in space and defend the other teams best player. His second year in the league, after he came back from the ACL, it really seemed like he found his shot (shot 40% from 3) but then he regressed a ton and just by looking at his stats, his first 2 years in the league have turned out to be his most productive.

He was way overpaid on his last deal and I think he'll still find a team that will give him a minimum deal in the NBA but I thought he'd stay in Houston with a chance for minutes and a championship. I guess with Gordon, Rivers, Green, McLemore all there already to back up Westbrook and Harden, there isn't a clear cut role for him? I'd imagine he doesn't want to just ride the bench on a minimum deal and he'd rather get minutes on a lesser team.

The Sixers could be a good landing spot, Zhaire Smith and Furkan Korkmaz are the backups to Josh Richardson, it seems like he could get minutes as a 2/3 there.
Go Knicks!

Morey was probably offering some partially guaranteed deal similar to Nene for the sole purpose of creating another tradeable contract. Shump obviously isn't having any of that.

More likely Shump having a hard time accepting he's a minimum contract player.

He looked good his rookie year.
Then he hurt his ACL the one playoffs where the Knicks won a series.
Play deccent in Cleveland.
Now he's a rapper.

I wouldn't play for the likely offer coming from a team with so much $ tied up in Harden and Westbrook either.
Especially not after making more than he deserved in CLE.
I mean he was always a lock down defender and when given starter role when Smith was hurt was much better offensively than when he came off the bench as he did most of his time there. He was far more streaky off the bench and that was never his calling.
he could easily start on half the teams in the league 3 years ago, not sure what his level of interest even is going forward.

he was fine his rookie year, and the first part of his second year. we knew he wasn't going to be an all-star, but it was nice to see a guy who put defense first, and gave a ****.

then he became a prima donna, and a giant puss. good riddance, glad he's not on the knicks

This guy should thank his lucky stars he ever got a decent contract. He's an athletic wing who consistently buckled during prime time. He was lucky to have an opportunity to stay in the league but good luck to him in Turkey or China...or the Big 3.

If Melo was interested in that deal and that role he would be in the league. Shump was probably offered the vet min to be a 10th man.
