How can the Redeem Team beat the Dream Team?
Is there a chance? Dream Team were way bigger, and they had the GOAT in his prime.
If you were to coach the 08 Redeem Team, how are you going to beat MJ and those other Hall of Famers?

Re: How can the Redeem Team beat the Dream Team?
They wouldn't.
It wasn't just Jordan, Larry may have been past his prime, we are talking about Magic, Barkley, Ewing, Pippen, Barkley, Robinson, Drexler, Stockton, Mullin who were all basically in their respective primes.
Besides Kobe, and Wade, some of the better players on the redeem team were relatively young, and though talented, didn't have the experience that the original dream team had. I think they would have been crushed.

Why so serious?

Re: How can the Redeem Team beat the Dream Team?
We've had this thread before - but it's an interesting question. Under FIBA rules the original Dream team's defense would be very, very difficult to score on. Ewing/Robinson can basically camp in the lane and shut down at the rim attempts.... and then you have Pippen, Jordan, etc out on the perimeter. That's just a terrifying defense without getting into some of the other good defenders on the dream team. The Dream Team would also kill the redeem team on the boards. Redeem would have to outshoot them to win (and the dream team had some really good shooters - although Bird being in poor health hurts them as I'm not sure how much he'd be able to play against a real opponent like that).

Meh...the dream team is pretty overrated. That said, it would be a tough game. You'd have to live and die by the 3.

Bird's back was completely screwed up at that point. I'm not sure he could be on the floor.

Yep - I think they'd play a lot more Mullin.... and MJ/Drexler/Pippen can all play various wing positions as needed.

Bird's back was so bad he could barley stand at times. It's amazing he was able to play as much as he did, but he isn't defending against a real team. Magic had sat out a season and wasn't really in game shape (played insanely well mind you). So the idea Magic was in his prime is kinda silly. The rest you could make that comment on.

I wouldn't worry about MJ, Drexler or Pippen in the point role either. All were exceptional passers all things considered.

Redeem Team would win. Bird was done by 1992 and Magic had been off for a year.
Dream Team is the best collection of talent ever seen, but Redeem Team was better because the players were actually in their prime.

Unlike the Dream Team, the Redeem Team was missing some of the league's best players and had pre-prime LeBron as opposed to peak Jordan. Put peak LeBron there and replace Deron, Prince, Boozer and Redd with Duncan, Garnett, Billups and Ray then things get a lot more interesting.
Dream Team
Magic/Stockton
Jordan/Drexler
Bird/Pippen/Mullin
Barkley/Malone/Laettner
Robinson/Ewing
Redeem Team (with best lineup and 2013 LeBron)
Kidd/Paul/Billups
Kobe/Wade/Allen
LeBron/Carmelo
Garnett/Bosh
Duncan/Dwight
That would be one heck of a series.

Re: How can the Redeem Team beat the Dream Team?
Its so tough to know because of the lack of 3 point shooting.
Magic, Jordan, Mullin/Pippen, Barkley, Ewing or Robinson
0-1 guys who can hit the 3
vs
Cp3, Kobe, Lebron, Melo/Wade, Dwight
I wonder if 2012 is better
Can go
Lebron, Kobe, KD, Melo, Love/Tyson
Or Put Iggy/Cp3/Russ instead of Melo
Lot of shooting, but would get beat inside a lot (especially if Love is the C)

I'm sure he couldn't be on the floor against any real opponents. He was completely done by then, could barely stand up at times. He was called because of his legacy. Same for Magic, though unlike Bird Magic could still play.

Who's barkley guarding if they go small ball and push the tempo? He going to guard what lebron, kobe, redd, wade, paul or kidd?
That said the natural choice is boozer who'd get schooled but not to the point it would cost them the game by himself.

The Dream team had plenty of 3 point shooting considering the shorter olympic line. MJ, Pippen, Stockton, Mullin and even Magic/Drexler. (Bird obviously - but his back was really shot by then).
Actually I think the Dream team has better shooters than the Redeem team. Who's killing you from 3 on the Redeem team? Kobe? Melo? Wade? Kidd?

Redd would be a good choice for 3 point shooting. Paul of course can shoot. If MJ can shoot Kobe can. Shorter line...melo isn't that awful. Same with lebron really, he was a 34% shooter in 09.

I'm not sure how effective going small would be. The Dream team had prime David Robinson - who seems like he'd be a perfect foil for small ball lineups given how well he can run the floor.
The Dream team could put MJ and Drexler in the back court with Pippen at the 3, Robinson at the 5 and then put Malone or whoever at the 4. That is a HUGE lineup where everyone can run like a small ball lineup that would be very difficult to score on (esp under FIBA rules)
Heck - they could play Magic instead of Malone at the 4 if they wanted to (or stockton- who could guard Paul or Kidd with Pippen, MJ, Drexler).
The Dream team actually has more flexible lineups than the redeem team in some ways - which is kind of funny. Heck - they could play their own crazy small ball lineups with magic at the 5 even.

Yeah forgot about Redd (and Paul of course). Still I don't see either team shooting the other off the court.

Oh dream team could go small for sure. But going big against them is just stupid. Howard of course was just fine and that was absolute apex howard, one of the few times I'd want him on a team. The point being the a Malone or Barkley as that second big, two guys who kill people in the post aren't really ideal to guard a lebron or switch onto a guard. If the idea is that Chuck is somehow going to break the game open, I'm not buying that one. I think we both agree that the redeem team is the under dog here.
