Comically, given how much talk there has been around the trade, there's a decent chance that come winter all three of the major leaguers in the deal will be DFAed/non-tendered.

And Stevenson will laugh and laugh. Side bet. Who gets more career wins as a jay? Merryweather or me?

Sanchez likely to be non tendered.
Biagini likely to not be on the playoff roster. Also hasnt pitched since September 10th where he gave up 6 runs without getting an out.
Might turn out to be just Stevenson for Fisher.

Which still makes it a bad trade.

For both teams...

Stevenson for $1.4m (which is roughly what it'd be if you deduct all of the players and just take the difference between Sanchez/Biagini and Fisher/min salary replacement) is oddly about fair value from Fangraphs' surplus value calculator, although not a deal I'd want to be making ever.

Both sides of the trade also wound up with negative WAR from the MLB players, which is quite funny. Although for this to turn out as a wash, we had to rely on Aaron Sanchez tearing up his shoulder and being unlikely to be ready for the start of 2020. Which, while he's been injury prone, was far from a foregone conclusion.

I dunno, I think it's pretty likely that Sanchez would have continued pitching poorly for the Astros like he was before he got hurt. Other than his first game against the Mariners he was extremely underwhelming. And while his shoulder came out of the blue, had that not happened the likelihood of him developing blisters of some sort was extremely high and probably would have ended with the same result. Sanchez just isn't very good and is hurt a lot.

Yeah, even when Sanchez is healthy it was probably nothing for nothing. Still annoying to have added a prospect, however fringy, but this will probably will go down in Jays board history as the highest pages-to-on-field-impact of any thread.

Re: Joe Biagini, Aaron Sanchez traded to Astros for Derek Fisher
Aaron Sanchez likely to miss the 2020 season;
Some details of Aaron Sanchez’s rather mysterious shoulder surgery were revealed today, as Sanchez told reporters (including Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle) that his September 10 procedure addressed a tear in his right shoulder capsule. The right-hander intends to pitch in 2020, though there isn’t any chance he’ll be ready for an Opening Day roster.
Rome made the comparison to Julio Urias’ capsule procedure, which took place in late June 2017 and kept the Dodgers hurler off a big league mound until mid-September 2018. While the circumstances of such surgeries vary from person to person, Urias’ injury was a relatively “clean” issue that didn’t include any other shoulder problems beyond the capsule, yet he was still out of action on the long end of a projected 12-to-14 month timeline.
Assuming that Sanchez’s injury is similar in nature, a return by late September 2020 would seem to be really pushing it. There isn’t a long track record of pitchers successfully regaining their old form following capsule surgeries, though Urias has posted some strong numbers (2.52 ERA, 3.27 K/BB rate, 9.7 K/BB) over 78 2/3 innings for Los Angeles this season, pitching mostly out of the bullpen.

That really sucks. I was never Sanchez's biggest fan, but that's the absolute last thing his career needed, and that's a really tough injury to come back from.

Re: Joe Biagini, Aaron Sanchez traded to Astros for Derek Fisher
Presumably, Sanchez will be looking at a 1+1 or 2 year deal, where the first season is really cheap, allowing a team to stash him on the 60-day until healthy.
And thus does the most talked about complete nothing of a trade largely come to a close.

He will sign with the Braves. AA loved him even though nothing he did in the minors resembled good pitching. If it wasn’t for 2016 he would be an afterthought or a journeyman reliever.

Re: Joe Biagini, Aaron Sanchez traded to Astros for Derek Fisher
He's in a really awkward spot unless someone thinks he's a starter, because really there's no reason to take on a reliever who will likely miss the whole 2020 season and has no team control. Best option might be to spent 2019 unsigned and hope he comes back throwing fire and someone gives him guaranteed money thereafter, because he is all downside risk as things stand.
I was never a big fan, but the timing on his injury is so damned rough. He might've gotten non-tendered anyway but would have gotten fallback deal somewhere.

Even though it ultimately turned out this way it was still a bad trade at the time. The Astros got free looks at 2 MLB level pitchers to see if they could things around and Sanchez was actually looking good before he got hurt. Considering the flawed player the Jays got in return, it wasn’t worth the risk.

Disagree that Sanchez was looking particularly good. He had one good start, sure, in which he (as per usual) missed the strike zone quite a bit, but those occasional rays of sunshine have always been part of the Aaron Sanchez Experience. It wasn't a good trade for us, because we got just about nothing, but this was the most likely outcome...even without the injury Sanchez was a longshot to be tendered unless he was willing to sign for a fair bit less than the $5.6m he was projected to receive in arbitration.

However, after looking at things a little closer, it would appear that all Derek Fisher needs is a full season before we can say beyond a shadow of doubt that he isn’t the player the club thinks he is. And, he may just get his shot in 2020 considering the question mark that is the Blue Jays outfield.
