Re: Do you play fantasy basketball?
I play points leagues not category. The ones I'm in are all H2H. I'm pretty surprised that there's never any traffic on the fantasy forum here with all these NBAheads we have. It's mostly just people soliciting open spots in their leagues. Of course, we have a specific forum just for that, but they choose to ignore it and flood the fantasy only board too
Fantasy Hoops/Football/Baseball fans..
For info on a forum that actually talks Fantasy sports and not spammed with soliciting leagues, PM me. The more the merrier !

I've been playing a bull **** FanDuel style league the past few years, and finally transitioned to a roto league this season upon invitation of a fellow RealGM'er. The format is definitely an improvement.

Nah, I just bet outright on underdog money lines and point spreads and which player’s gonna score first.

I play both roto and H2H, and I know purists prefer roto, but it’s hard to stay engaged if you aren’t close to the top. H2H is more interesting especially if you know the people you’re playing. I’ve also admittedly never been comfortable with auction drafts, but do get the argument for them being better.

Head to head categories.
Our buy-in is up to $250 for a 12 man league this year

I agree. Though I only play roto right now. One dynasty league and one redraft. I won the redraft last year so it kept me really engaged.

All my best friends from high school / we all hooped together back then are the other people in the league. Been playing with the same league and guys since 2001 (11th grade).

I run a $200 H2H league. I use expanded rosters and limit games played to make it more balanced.

Re: Do you play fantasy basketball?
I play in 2 $100 H2H 9 category leagues on Yahoo.
I like categories better because it brings a little more strategy into the team building aspect. I always like to punt assists for example and then dominate in blocks, FG%, rebounds, turnovers (fewer), and steals. It makes for a fun matchup in the playoffs too because you have to take into account your opponents teams strengths are and either try to beat them at that or attack their weaknesses.
Definitely dont play it on ESPN, their software is garbage.

I like categories better too. If you lose 5-4 in categories, I don't think you should be 0-1 after the week. But some people like it better because they think it is more strategic...you have to be tough in at least 7 cats, or REALLY tough in 5 to win, instead of more of an even team.

Re: Do you play fantasy basketball?
Head to head-- in Roto, if you suck at draft (or unlucky, for injuries) that about ends your season early. Not true for H2H.
If there is no basketball in heaven, i am not going.

Re: Do you play fantasy basketball?
Hey bw
I honestly prefer h2h>9cat roto>8cat roto.
I think the strategy involved in 9 cat h2h team building, and the kinds of teams you can actually create (small ball, lots of bigs, etc.) makes it the standard format. You also can have mid-season turn-arounds because of the playoffs format, and your reward for sticking with an injured player/stashing is potentially greater. Injuries hurt, but as long as the player is returning your season isn't automatically over as in roto.
Roto tends to be a bit too no-brainer when team building, especially 8 cat which lacks any real strategy beyond accumulating the best players. You get locked into your league rank/standings fairly early so there isn't very much to play for unless you're 1st or close to 1st place. It's less likely that making good moves to change your roster around will have much of an impact than in 9 cat h2h. A long injury (a few weeks or a month or two) can basically end your season.
I've always been a bit annoyed that our own Suns forum leagues are run in 8 cat roto, which to me is the absolute worst thing. We have the same problems year-to-year with inactive managers after the first few weeks of the season. I don't know who is in charge of those decisions, but it definitely should be changed. It's what we're used to but I honestly don't think it's the best decision for the leagues.

Re: Do you play fantasy basketball?
h2h 9cat 12 teams yahoo. This is my second season. I had 3 teams last year and 3 now. Last year I didn't know anything about it, and finished drafts at last place with all 3 teams. It took me big part of the season to figure out what's going on. Then I decided to punt FG% FT% and TO, and used almost all 4 available player changes every week. One team finished 7th, and missed 6th place in the regular season for 1 win, another team finished 2nd and lost by also 1 win (category), and the last one finished 1st. I tend to use all-around players, with at least 1-2 specialists in steals and blocks mostly

Re: Do you play fantasy basketball?
I love fantasy basketball. It's become one of those little guilty pleasures in life. I feel like I've reached a level where I know what I' doing so I'm really tempted to go into a real money league (not a sports better at all). I'd also like trying one of those dynasty leagues.
I have found that there isn't that much difference to be honest, though my experience in Roto is limited too.
Basically in Roto you want to give yourself a chance to compete in every category, so the more well-rounded a player is, the more value he has. KAT is a god and clear #1 in Roto IMO as he has no real statistical weakness (other than steals maybe). Giannis loses a bit of value as he gets you no 3s and FT %age is iffy.
I'd rather play H2H, just more fun to build your team that way and use punting strategies.
