Heat Banish James Johnson For Not Meeting Their Conditioning Requirements

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Oct 1, 2019 3:44 pm

The Miami Heat have banished James Johnson from their training camp as he reported out of shape based on their metrics.

The Heat said in a statement that Johnson "fell short of our conditioning requirements. Once he fulfills and maintains those requirements, he will rejoin the team."

Pat Riley banished Antoine Walker and James Posey during the 2006 preseason for conditioning issues.

Johnson is entering the third year of a four-year contract that includes a player option for 2020-21.

Erik Spoelstra praised Johnson just one day ago.

"He’s been very serious about his work this summer," Spoelstra said. "You can see it in our conditioning day. He did a great job with that. He’s a unique two-way player in his ability to guard one through five when he's healthy and facilitate and make other players better from a hybrid frontcourt position is unique. He's coming in healthy."

Using the word "banish" seems so comical. He's being suspended by the team until he meets his conditions.

This seems a little more than just out of shape. Otherwise why praise him just 2 days ago about his conditioning?!? Did he maybe over do it on a cheat day and gained a few pounds or could it be that he got in a fight with a teammate?

Also, I don't think the writer knows how to use the word "banish" properly, lol.

It says a lot about quality of the education system in the United States that people there think that "banished" is not a modern English word.

banish is the correct term here

Not really. Banishment is supposed to be an official sort of punishment, and permanent. If it's not a suspension by NBA definitions - so that he isn't losing money - then using something like "dismissed from camp" or "sent home" would have been a little more suitable in this context. Excluded, withheld, ruled out... all would have worked better than banished.

"banish"? is that like sending him out into the desert?

it's somehow just the perfect pat riley-ism

except he isn't "sent home" or "dismissed from camp"

he's still in the same facility working out, just not participating in team activities

and yes, he's being punished for being out of shape thus not allow to participate in team workout.

withheld or ruled out would have a negative connotation to it because it make it look there is tension between the two parties

so banish is the proper term here

Don't the heat have the highest standards for this? Not saying they're wrong for doing it.

I kinda imagine it like they did it to Stan in South Park. Tie Johnson to horse or donkey and send him to the woods.

Banished is usually used with the intent of it being permanent and having no-entry to any team facilities.

"You have been banished from the kingdom!" That didn't mean you can still use the blacksmith and pub but not invited to kingdom events.

This is not the case. Suspended from team activities would have worked best.

Also, while yes banish is an English word, it is very rarely used in the modern age. There are a lot of words that we no longer use or that are only used in certain English speaking regions and not in others.

Plain and simple, it just sounds incorrect and funny.
