i think darius garland is flying so under the radar because of his injury but he has a serious chance of winning ROY. he reminds me so much of damian lillard; put up huge stats on great efficiency in the games and it led to winning (vanderbilt was 4-0 with him, 5-23 without him). he put up 20/5/3 on great efficiency in four games, and that includes a complete dud vs. alcorn state.

he should be healthy and he's playing on the cavs where he should have tons of opportunity to put up numbers. if there's anyone outside of the top 3 that's going to win ROY, it's garland.

I wonder if Kabengele will get minutes with the Clippers. He was the player I wanted the Celtics to draft the most and the player I am looking forward to watching so I can see how well he does in the league.

I he does it on a 20 win team, I doubt that he gets RoY. If the Knicks add enough talent for them to be reasonably competitive, I doubt RJ puts up those numbers.

IMO, Zion has got to the point where he is underrated. I think he is going to have a better year than RJ on a better team than NY.

Rookie Thread 2019-2020 Season - It’s about to get real

Post#124 » by sfernald » Wed Oct 2, 2019 3:21 pm

So who do you think will be the best rookie this year? How are your rookies looking in training camp so far? Who is going to stand out from the crowd in this nba season? And who is going to be the most disappointing?

I just want to say I am excited for this season like no other because of the WMD, Zion. I think he’ll breeze easily to the rookie of the year award assuming that Ben Simmons actually doesn’t quality this year!

My prediction of stats are 23pts/12rebs/5assists/3steals with great defense.

That is pretty bold. I would lower that to Ayton type numbers. Every player/team in the NBA knows how to defend and box out a little better than Notre Dame, Pitt, Wake Forest, Miami, Boston College, and Georgia Tech....

I really like Rui, think he'll end up one of the best in the draft.

Zion I think will easily won ROY but wont live up to the overall hype (like the stat line OP posted). I just dont think he has the diversified offensive skill set to consistently put up 20 ppg as a rookie. Also dont see how OP thinks he averages 12 rpg as he only averageed 9 in college

I am interested in seeing who ends up having the better rookie season between DeAndre Hunter and Cam Reddish. By most reports the Hawks GM really wanted Cam to drop and he gave up a lot to go get Hunter.

I predict a efficient 12 and 4 for Hunter; 9 and 3 for Cam. That may not replace Prince and Bazemore offensively but it is not far off; and by the end of the season they could have a better defensive impact.

Winner: Zion

Runner up: Morant

Dark horse: DeAndre

Virginia plays at such a slow pace that they really hold their players back offensively. Hunters per, 24.0, was higher than any wing taken in the top 10. I honestly think you can flip a coin between Barrett and Hunter as to who is the best pro prospect.

You're a big fan of Carsen Edwards right? I think I remember you saying that somewhere...

Really hoping we nailed this draft with Edwards and Williams.... Obviously Romeo is such a wildcard as we don't know a whole lot about him yet

haven't read the whole thread, but Michael Porter Jr. has the best chance. Then Ja and Rui. Zion if he plays lot of minutes

If MPJ is healthy do you still think he will get a lot of minutes and produce? Morris-Murray-Harris-Beasley-Craig-Barton-Grant-Millsap-Jokic-Plumlee is already a stacked rotation.

This is a good example of small sample size problems—if you take out just ONE good game against a weak team (Liberty), his stats actually kinda suck. 15/4/3, 4 TOs per game, 45% from the field on big minutes, 34mpg. Those are mediocre and would count against most prospects, certainly wouldn’t make a case for them by themselves. (Not to mention that the games he played were against nothing teams, warm up games against small conference teams before the real ones started.) We really don’t know if his full season would’ve ended up looking really nice (like if his season ended right after 4 games) or pretty blah (like if it ended after 3 games), have to look at other things to make the case for or against him.

That makes senses, i mean rookie forwards depends on their team to feed them with assist. Look Ayton last year, he puts insane numbers (19pts 9 rbs),arguably one of the best rookie numbers for a big, and he even wasnt runaway....So i say, RJ Barret will win roty

Seems like poor reasoning—Ayton has good numbers but other people had better ones and played much bigger roles helping their teams win. Doncic’s 21/8/6 is easily better than Aytons stat line, and Young put up an efficient 25/10 in the last couple months of he season. There was no prejudice against big men, Ayton just obviously wasn’t as good of a player last year as a few other rooks were.

I blame that on the Suns coaching staff last year. They had him trying to play like Clint Capela when they should've tried to utilizehis
offensive skill set more. How you can be the #1 pick in the draft, on a team that lacks talent, and STILL get treated like a 4th-5th option, I really don't know.I think that's why Kokoskov was let go by the Suns.It was obvious he had no idea how to use Ayton.I think Ayton could've easily put up 20 & 10 last year if they actually cared to run plays for him.I still think he could end up the best player from the 2018 draft. He has that type of potential, I'll say.I still have doubts about his aggressiveness. If the guy had killer instinct, he could probably turn into another Hakeem Olajuwon.Unfortunately, I don't see that type of drive in him. He'll always put up numbers, tho.I expect him to put up 20 & 10 seasons in his sleep.
