I'd probably have to go with The Thing. Visual effects way ahead of it's time.

It Follows and I don't think it's close. Loved the simple premise. Loved how non overpowered the "villain" was. Loved the long, zoomed out shots instead of jump scares. I definitely have to watch it again, but that's what I remember.

Some of the luster has worn off it, but I loved Blair Witch Project when it first came out. The "found footage" genre has been done to death by now but this was one of a kind back in the day. I really like the original [REC} (the spanish version).

The Descent is always one of my gotos. Scream and the latest IT and Halloween are all really fun.

I watched The Exorcist when I was 7 and it traumatized me  . So i'd say that and The Shining.

Favorite? The Exorcist, the Halloween series generally, original Omen, The Strangers, the Thing, Jeepers Creepers, It Follows, Paranormal Activity, The Conjuring, Insidious, Lights Out, You're Next. Some of these may not necessarily qualify.

Scariest? The Exorcist and it's not even close. Also, regardless of your feelings on the film overall, the Witch had one of the most **** up, uncomfortable scenes I've ever watched with the baby.

EDIT: Ashamed that I forgot The Amityville Horror (original)

Yeah The Descent was great. I had a few issues with it
Spoiler:
If you are trying to imply that the woman is imagining the whole thing, then don't show kills when she isn't around

but overall it was really good.

I would throw Jaws in the horror genre.

I saw Joker tonight and Phoenix was absolutely mesmerizing in his role. It was a beautifully shot movie, but also very graphically violent at moments, just in case that’s not your thing. I don’t get some of the backlash against the movie either after watching it. It’s not asking you to pity him or root for him, it’s just a very real portrayal of a terrible person making terrible decisions after experiencing a terrible life.

Well as a super little kid, I would look at the boxes of the Nightmare on Elm Street series at the video store (zoomers--wtf is that?) and be scared out of my mind. Hellraiser was also scary as hell if you caught that on cable switching between channels.

Troll 2...also strangely creepy to a young kid. Very laughable though when you got older. That's always been a favorite of mine.

First 2 were great. 3rd was ok. Everything after pure garbage.

The first one had the biggest surprise in any movie I've seen.

Agree with all of this.

When people are pre offended by a film they haven’t yet seen it really scares me as to what is going to happen to all forms of art moving forward.

The Freddy Snake pic on the back of the box for #3 gave me the willies.

Top horror movie for me is still probably The Shining, or maybe American Werewolf in London. If you open the definition of "horror movie" a bit, Alien, Psycho, and Silence of the Lambs are also up there. Poltergeist, Scream, Night of the Living Dead, and Shaun of the Dead are great.

Not horror, but Ghostbusters, Young Frankenstein, and the Addams Family movies are also in the regular October rotation.

Hear, hear. Saw it tonight, and feel quite disappointed in all the pearl-clutching going on over this film. As a lifelong batman fan I loved the film, and thought that perhaps it holds up such a mirror to ongoing issues in society that it makes many uncomfortable. Riveting story, and quite well-told

I liked The Strangers some when i first saw it back when it came out. Watched it recently for the first time since back then though and found myself confused as to why i had liked it. Just yet another horror movie where the people being stalked can't seem to stop making one really dumb decision after another, until they finally die.
