Ron Swanson wrote:At least now this dumb hyperbolic myth about Durant being a 7-footer can finally end. I mean, I get it, "7-footer with handles" sounds cool when an announcer says it on TV.

He's the same height as a typical player listed at 7-foot.

It does bring to mind that study from a few years ago about the % of people 7' and over that played in the NBA that never considered that players listed at 7' in the NBA really were shorter.

Zion the 6'6 power forward. Or small ball Center.

We have to remember these heights are without shoes. So he's effectively 6'7 which is fine.

So basically about 6'7-6'8 depending on the shoes

well, Charles Barkley may not have topped 6'5 w/o shoes but he averaged 12 rebounds a game over his career and 4 offensive rebounds a game. If Zion learns how to use his mass like Barkley did, his 6'6 won't matter. Besides that he has handles and that means he'll be spending plenty of time outside the paint

Don't really have to predict, pre-draft measurements list official heights barefoot. They will probably be at least that, or more depending if they were measured young enough to grow a little more.

Magic roster:

Augustin - 5'10
Fultz - 6'2.75 (not measured, this is a guess)
MCW - 6'4.75
Iwundu - 6'5.5
Fournier - 6'5.75
Ross - 6'6
Aminu - 6'7.25
Gordon - 6'7.5
Birch - 6'7.5
Isaac - 6'10 (never measured, this is a guess)
Vucevic - 6'10.25
Bamba - 6'11.25

DJ Augustin is only 5'10? I thought he would be at least 6'0 w/o shoes.

Allegedly. No nba reps there so teams can pretty much post what they want and with rounding up to nearest inch you can bet anything over 6'5" got rounded up to 6'6". They should have did 1/4" or half inch increments and had nba rep do the measurements rather than team trainers.

Yup. Looking at past combines, most shoe heights add an inch and a half to the measurement. So that would put Zion at 6'7.5", which would put him on the smaller end for sure for a PF but not some ridiculously short height that we haven't seen before though. Then you add in his freakish athleticism and his strength, I think he will be fine.

Pure conjecture.

Who says they're going to round 1/4" up to the nearest full inch?

This is the issue of not having an official from the NBA do this. Teams could easily fake these numbers which then leads to no one taking these numbers serious. Even though I dont think Zion being 6'6 is all that stunning, he was 6'5.5" a couple years ago, him growing a half an inch from 17-19 and seeing him next to guys like Lonzo (who is supposed to be 6'6 with shoes), the 6'6 barefoot height looks right.

Over the years, I've met/run across several NBA players, and having played ball, I can probably guestimate what their true (shoeless) height is:

I'm 189.5cm (or a little less than 6'3 barefoot) and many guys listed as taller than me were often eye-to-eye with me or shorter.

JJ Reddick: 6'2
Tobias Harris: 6'6
Doug McDermott: 6'5-6'5.5
Elfrid Payton: 6'2 ... maybe he has grown because he was very young when I met him, but he was my height... including the hair
Chandler Parsons: a legit 6'7-6'8, and that was while he was in high-school, so he may have grown since

Some that lo longer play:
DeShawn Stevenson: 6'3 ... my height exactly, if I had to guess
Hedo: legit 6'10 or taller--dude is massive despite his posture and gut
Big Baby: 6'5... barely taller than me, but as wide as two of me, haha
Never met Dwight, but from up close, didn't look that tall--probably 6'8 or maybe 6'8.5; ridiculously wide and built though
Never met Vucevic either, but the opposite of Dwight--I think he's a legit 7' barefoot

From personal observations, many of the guys I've met or observed from fairly up-close are a good 2-3 inches shorter than listed. I remember being told that your spine compresses almost a centimeter or more over the day (or about half an inch)--you add some generous soles in the shoes, and it's not surprising that the playing heights are nowhere near barefoot heights.

I think the listed heights were more a marketing thing than anything, kind of like WWE light. I talked to Glenn Jacobs' (Kane from WWE) college coach and he told me that he was the most ridiculously gifted athlete he's ever seen, but he was 6'8 on a good day, and nowhere near 7' like his WWE height--but it sounds much more impressive. I think same thing is true for NBA players--you want giants playing ball not some 6'1 guys.

Anyhow, my 2c.
