After spending a week with the squad in Flagstaff for training camp and getting to know them as players and people for the first time, Devin Booker was given a name and then responded with his rapid-fire impressions of his new teammates.

Ricky Rubio
"Fierce competitor. High-level competitor. Great leader. Talking on both ends of the floor, making sure everybody is in the right spot, so he’s definitely that nucleus of a point guard that you need.”

Dario Saric
"A lot, lot better — I mean I didn’t get to watch him play in Philly a lot, especially with the ball-dominant people that he played around there. I think he couldn’t show as much as he’ll be able to this year. He can do a little bit of everything. Pass, dribble, shoot. Mobile four. He can make plays from that position too and he’s a lot taller than I thought he was.”

Cam Johnson
"Very good, very good. Obviously you can tell he’s well-coached throughout his whole life. He just knows basketball actions. Never stops moving without the ball. He shoots at a high clip.”

Ty Jerome
"Very smart player, very high IQ. Spoke on him a little bit already. I notice the way he thinks the game. Even when he makes a mistake, he knows the mistake he made, and at the same time, he’s leading, putting people in the right position, and doing that as a rookie says a lot about your knowledge for the game.”

Frank Kaminsky
"Spaces the floor. Shot the ball very well this training camp. Every time we messed up a coverage when he was left open, you knew it was going in. Definitely a floor spacer. Great personality off the court too. I think the fans are gonna love the way he goes about things.”

Cheick Diallo
"Hard player. He’s gonna play at a 100 miles per hour the whole time. Sets the screens, catches the lobs, blocks the shots that you need. He’s that type of player that you want on your team, doing all the dirty work.”

Jevon Carter
“Similar, also. He’s gonna pick you up 94 feet, the West Virginia way. Very good defender. Every time he’s guarding you, you know you gotta make sure you’re on your Ps and Qs and take care of the ball because you know he’s definitely going to speed you up.”

Jalen Lecque
"Very athletic. He’s still gonna learn — it’s an interesting league. Once his jump shot expands and gets better and he gets to the free-throw line, I think his rhythm will be a lot better. Super athlete, he has instincts you can’t teach.”

Crazy especially when you compare to his last years rapid fire impressions on his new teammates then.

Trevor Ariza
Bro... like why we get this guy in the first place. We needed a PG but the front office got me another damn wing player. Idk, maybe they know basketball better than me. He’s cool I guess.

Ryan Anderson
Not even gonna lie, I thought dude retired like two years ago. Then I hear we trade for him? Like yooooo, this front office crazy. Can still hit threes though, I’ll give em that.

Mikal Bridges
Dude is a rook but he’s older than me AND I been in the league for three years. Nah... Mikals cool, high IQ, plays solid defense and can shoot threes. Unlike last years rook they gave me, that dude is garbage.

DeAndre Ayton
Hes the guy I wanted the Suns to draft if I’m being honest. Shaq-Kobe 2.0 is happening. Low-key he just needs to hustle and not pick up bad habits from some of our vets. Not trying to drop names but Tyson’s been dogging it since my rookie year. On the real I called Tyson one time to get a workout in and he tells me he’s at a Dave and Busters with Justin frickin Bieber.

Elie Okobo
He’s helping me learn French so I gotta give hit props for that.

Richaun Holmes
Dude grinds and works hard. Need that kind of energy off the bench even when we down 30 points by the 2nd quarter. Trust me it’ll happen. A lot.

We had him and didnt win 20
Games . Yall want to keep running 3 SFs ? Or did we do the right thing and picked up ricky rubio for our PG , Saric for 4 , etc !

Warren is the odd man out. Our team didnt want him! STFU yall are obsessed with a bench player who can score and thats it

By that measure, no one on the roster was worth sht.

Really hope these silly injuries don’t derail the start of the season. I broke my nose playing ball this year and had deviated septum surgery. I didn’t expect the recovery to be so painful .. I remember I was advised no physical activity for around a month... hopefully Baynes is Back by the season opener...

The Bridges and Oubre injuries, as long as they are not long term and don't linger into the season, are a good opportunity for Cam. He gets the opportunity to run with the starters and if he can take on that Klay-type role that really pulls gravity from Booker to open up his game further it would be great to see. It will be good to see what his defensive chops are like too.

Ultimately Bridges with his great D and great shooting (he shot 43.5% from 3 on 6 attempts per game his final year in college so I imagine now that he has gotten used to NBA distance and will have better teammates, primarily a PG, and a 4 who can also stretch the floor where the defense respects), he will be the great fit there. But it would give us a lot of options for different lineups.

When you look at their current overall games... I really don’t think it’s questionable that Warren is currently better then Oubre/Bridges....

Problem is Oubre/Bridges are much better fits next to Book/Ayton hence the move.

There isn't much reason to discuss this too much longer, but TJ would have been great as the 6th man, imo better than Oubre, and Bridges should start, and does fit better next to them like you say. TJ's improvement from 3 is enormous for him.

I don't think long term Oubre is the best fit unless his defensive team IQ improves as well as his 3 pt ball, and it seems he wants a lot of money, AND we have Cam, who, hopefully, if his shooting and bbiq translates (two things that almost certainly should), I don't see Oubre being worth a lot of money here long term.

He is great for the locker room, and really provided a spark last year, so for now, it's good to have him. But if people buy into Monty and the team improves, I don't know if Oubre at a ton of money makes sense here long term.

As for TJ, people mention he wouldn't accept a 6th man role and all sorts of stuff. He never mentioned that...just that he'd do whatever and just wants to play. Of course everyone wants to start, but he never seemed to whine, at least not publicly, when he kept going back to the bench, even though ultimately they kept moving him back to the starting lineup because his replacements were awful.

He probably was ready to move on, as someone mentioned imagine him having to play behind washed up Ariza or Josh Jackson, two clearly inferior players at this point.

So it's good for him he's in Indiana, and that we have Bridges and Cam as cheap options who can shoot, and Bridges can play great D (hopefully Cam can play good D too). Oubre is a nice bridge to have as they improve and before they need to get paid.

Are Book's comments about last year's players real or are they jokes made up by fans?

Sucks Bridges has a bone bruise. Those can linger. Same thing TJ had last year as did Covington and both were out a long time.

There have been a few good articles about the Suns on The Athletic lately. Here are excerpts from a good one. I will probably put part of it in the Rubio thread, part in the Booker thread, and part in the Ayton thread...

When asked earlier this week about preferred style of play, new Suns coach Monty Williams stressed that his team must become more efficient. That’s understandable, given Phoenix ranked 28th in offensive rating (105.3 points per 100 possessions) and 29th in defensive rating (114.2 points allowed per 100 possessions) while stumbling to a 19-63 record last season.

In an effort to fix a long list of 2018-19 shortcomings, this summer the Suns added proven point guard Ricky Rubio, more frontcourt size and multiple floor-spacers. But, when using advanced analytics, how much better is this season’s roster construction?
We’ve enlisted The Athletic NBA analyst Seth Partnow to help answer this question. Partnow previously was the Milwaukee Bucks’ director of basketball research, before joining our team this past spring.

Using a variety of advanced metrics, Partnow examines topics such as Rubio’s projected impact, how Booker can sharpen his game in his fifth NBA season and if Phoenix can anticipate legitimate improvement in interior defense and long-range shooting.

All this talk around training camp about Book, Ayton, how Rickey is the new lynchpin. Tyler Johnson, Oubre, the rooks both looking promising. Bridges, Baynes and all the bigs making a difference. A name I have not heard any whisper of is one ELLIE OKOBO!!! Is he still with this team when we start meaningful games? Is he enough of an asset for another team to trade for him?

Looking at the makeup of this team I am reminded that if Oubre and Bridges are out, then behind Cam Johnson at the 3 would have to be Booker.

Okobo's the third SG on the roster:

Rubio/Jerome/Carter
Booker/Johnson/Okobo/Lecque
Oubre/Bridges/Johnson
Saric/Kaminsky/[Owens?]
Ayton/Baynes/Diallo

Okobo at best is still a "project." He will not seeing meaningful minutes, assuming he's still on the team.

Good to see Oubre practicing... looks like he should be back by the opener without issue.

Return to Phoenix Suns
