I really find it disconcerting the number of Americans that think he can't or shouldn't say what he did (both threads). That the NBA or rockets should/would punish Morey. That he can't speak freely. That he has to censor himself. Because another nation limits free speech.

Just out of curiosity.... do you think it's you that changed with regards to freedom, or do you think it's a larger scale brainwashing or cultural change that makes people willingly surrender their rights?

Houston should be ashamed for not supporting their human rights violations with vigor.

It doesn't have anything to with rights/morals and everything to do with money/sway.

See the US relationship with Saudi Arabia.

Not strange at all. His words matter as one of the faces of an organization. Thats part of the equation he has to consider when speaking on a matter. It was unprofessional. He understands the buisness relationship the Rockets have with China. If he choose to speak on the issue then Im sure he understands the states role in that relationship.

It was a childish move and put a lot of people in a difficult spot.

Well that all depends on who/what you speak of, doesn't it?

I'm sure Morey speaking out about something like Boko Haram probably wouldn't have been considered "unprofessional" or anything like that. Probably because it's not something that would effect the bottom line. He'd probably be praised for speaking up.

But of course when he speaks about something that involves an entity with 1.4 billion people with burgeoning wallets/purses who might consider watching the NBA, well now it becomes "unprofessional" and he should've known better. Strange the way that always works.

And guess who the president of Chinese Basketball league is?

Yao Ming

Who played his whole career with the Rockets and had his jersey retired. Nice for Yao to pay them back like this.

I'll start by saying I don't care that he said anything and I certainly don't think he should be fired for it.

That said, I strongly disagree with your point of people can say anything they want with no repercussions. In general, yes, thats fine, but when you work for a company and are one of the faces of that company, you need to represent them. If I own a restaurant and one of my bartenders is getting in political debates with everyone, causing customers to not come back, I'm not going to let that person hurt my business anymore. Regardless of whether or not they have the right to say it, if its costing me money, then its bad business.

Leave politics out of sport. Too controversial. Nobody is ever going to be in agreement.

Whether or not Morey gets punished by a private organization has nothing to do with free speech. He can say whatever he wants...a private organziation can also take action to salvage an important busienss relationship.

Not saying they will or should...but the action is not related to free speech

It would be nice if every team and the NBA grew a sack and decided not to do business with them either.

Equivalent to this situation where Rockets GM support Hong Kong is situation where president of company that is part of the military industrial complex criticize selling arms to their biggest clients. It's just stupid and show lack of self awareness.

I’m not educated enough on the subject matter to say what side is wrong or right when it comes to the protesters etc and I know enough to not try to, but morey IMO should have stayed out of it.

I am always a huge believer in having strong opinions and letting them known when it’s brought up in conversation or amongst friends or having believe in certain charitys and or organization and letting my feelings known when they are MY PERSONAL opinions.

However when you are looked at almost as the head of a company or chairman of a company like morey is ,his viewpoints will be misconstrued as a barometer for the entire rockets organization. He should have been smarter inserting his personal beliefs As it almost always only upsets or angers certain segments of the fanbase.

This, it’s remarkable that people don’t understand that constitutional rights are rights against the government.

Before war broke out, liberty-loving American patriots in Boston fought for their freedom by pouring hot tar onto the naked body of a customs official whose offense was trying to collect legally mandated import fees. HKers seem incredibly gentle by comparison.

Ugh, I hate this because there are always some anarchists / highly frustrated people who want to take out anger on something waiting in the background to take advantage of situations like this. Then they either don't realize or care that they are actually hurting the voice of the people who are trying to effect specific change because they become a means of propaganda for the other side saying "look at what these 'freedom fighters' are doing".

Its not that he can't. Its more like he shouldn't. This is not about freedom of speech. This is about representing the organization that he works for. CEOs have been fired and celebrities canceled for less than that on Twitter.
Morey ,as the GM, is the head of the Rockets organization. Those words now negatively affects his work and brings unneeded distraction to his team. He can speak freely. That is his right. But he should also we willing to face the consequences. I wouldn't be surprised if he is fired and the NBA blacklist him from joining another team.

Morey majorly effed up and i'm sure he knows it too.

I don't think Yao has any choice in this matter.

Why didn’t you post the videos of what that old man did before he got beaten up?

He is a taxi driver, and he intentionally hit the crowd and crashed two protesters (at that time the protest was peaceful). One of the injured may be permanently disabled.
