So I made a comment when hanging out with people about how other people's weddings are probably more fun than your own. My GF has latched onto this and thinks I don't want to marry her.

I hate hosting parties. **** me, right? :dontknow:

I'm very glad my wife has never been that sensitive. Counter issue: having a stubborn teacher/wife with 3/4 of a psych degree leads to lots of difficult discussions about intentions and emotions

Very easily she should understand that a lot of people find weddings stressful for financial, familial and public attention reasons. It has nothing to do with the actual process of marrying the one you love.

Uhf, I suppose context always matters but at face value I think your comment is pretty fair. Hopefully just a rough moment for her...

Hahaha, I couldn't agree more. Your perspective (my experience) is that it's a bunch of stressors leading up to one day (financial, time) but attending one is just a big, fun party.

Sounds like she has a fear of abandonment, which is common and very human. If you're looking for a quick way to address her needs you can validate her feelings and reassure her. You could try 'You felt scared when I told you other people's weddings are probably more fun than your own and you felt abandoned.' She will tell you if that rings true. Even if it doesn't she will feel heard and supported.

Or just leave her and not have to deal with that garbage. :D

Saw a bunch of writers on Twitter saying they'd be let go, wasn't really sure why. After reading that article, I'll be going out of my way to not support TheMaven in any way. Just trash...

We made Rea's Pollo a La Plancha from Moonlight the other night. It was fantastic.

What's happening at SI sucks, but I have to say that I'm surprised they lasted this long. They should have gone the way of The Athletic a long time ago - **** print journalism, focus exclusively on online-subscription platforms, hire the best writers you could find, and go from there.

Unfortunately from what I've seen, I don't know if The Athletic is going to be around for long. They are running on venture funding to get their subscriber base up.

Athletic will be raising rates or (more likely) cutting way back on staff and going the high volume/low quality/click bait route. It's a shame, they have some quality stuff.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

A weekly print newsmagazine with shorter pieces is hampered compared to digital counterparts simply due to time constraints. However, a monthly with longer pieces and a big investigative component could do still make headway imo. Squint real hard and a monthly version of SI with an additional 4 special quarterly issues [think a combined college and preview of football, a combined basketball preview, MLB preview and a special theme] and you might have something befitting the term "prestige publication." I still subscribe to paper magazines [bring back Redbook, you heathens!] and it's the longform pieces that keep me renewing. It's too bad that the OG Bleacher Report template is the one that venture dipishts keep turning to, because there are viable alternatives apart from content millage. The weekly Sports Illustrated is anachronistic, but that doesn't mean SI itself has to be doomed. If it were up to me, I'd still keep a component on trad newscoverage, but bring in angles taken by outlets like The Classical, Victory Journal and Oxford American. Here's a link to Victory, whose better known contributors include David Roth and Nathaniel Friedman, to get a taste of what I'm trying to express.

https://victoryjournal.com/

The piece "Cosmic Cars" is a particularly great example - and super interesting on a topic I normally wouldn't care about it. Reminds me of Deadspin's longer posts on endurance events and downhill skiing. I still believe good writing on printed material can win out.

I don't doubt that The Athletic has some good stuff, but it has been doomed from the get-go. Once they run out of VC, like was pointed out, they won't be able to keep their journalists without raising rates. And they already can't get enough people to subscribe - raising rates won't help. They just aren't profitable.

No, you’re absolutely correct. The worst wedding experience I ever had was my own. It’s all stress, schedules, pictures, hand shaking, saying goodbye to every damn person who leaves to the point where you can’t do anything fun....

Also, this isn’t a discussion you can win before the wedding though. She’ll have to see it for herself.

They also opened up saying they were so much different from newspapers and they would have so many in depth stories that you couldn't find anywhere else.

Well, all they did was hire a bunch of writers from newspapers and they have maybe one in depth story that's interesting and worth reading a month and that's really not even close to worth it.

I was selected in the Ryder Cup ticket lottery. Is it worth the trouble to buy these with the intent to resell, or should I let my golf-loving friends in on the action?

I was too. If my parents didn't get selected I'm just gonna let them use the code.

I was there for the PGA. Beautiful course but tough as a spectator as is the case with links courses. It would still be cool to attend a Ryder Cup. And since the PGA was moved to May there will be no more of those at Whistling Straights
