Yes. And then executing Alec Baldwin and sticking Mormons in education camps. And don't speak out against Fox News or they'll take your internet and driver's license.

The people of China only put up with it because the growth over the last 30 years has been insane. It's slowing now and companies are moving to South East Asia and India where labour is 1/3 the cost.

Xi clamping down tighter and tighter because he knows the people won't put up with it much longer. The communist party in China is going to look real ugly in 10 years or so.

Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequence. The problem isn't that China disagrees with Morey's statement, it's that they believe he doesn't have the right to make the statement at all.

100% this.

It irritatates me to no end that people think free speech means you can say what you want without ramifications.

Free speech just means you don't have to worry about going to jail for life or being executed.

Singapore is very authoritarian in their own way and it works for them. I dunno if they are more authoritarian than the Chinese, but it can't be denied that their system has succeeded in raising the living standards of those who live there.

LOL, when youve been to as many shipyards in Singapore like I have you'll see that Singapore has a vast underclass, usually Indian or Bangladeshi, that almost borders on servitude.

Amen. Tons of people use freedom of speech as a shield. They have consequences. Right or wrong.

Yep people don't like putting a microscope to their opinions. China is bad because we've always been taught they were. Them bringing Chinese people out of poverty is overlooked because of the human rights violations it took to gain that wealth. Meanwhile the defense of Singapore ignores their negative effects on the lives of their political underclass.

But the consequences cannot be jail time, like China, or government civil action, like Singapore.

Every country does have human rights issues. But if you follow politics and the news, China is really really bad for it.

Journalists just... disappear... even from HK. Which is a lot about what this protest is about.

How about the Journalist from Saudi or UAE, which cause Canada to lose it's armoured vehicle contract with Saudi (because Trudea decided to say something about it).... I mean it's NO different.

We just turned a blind eye like everyone else did.....

It's all perspective.....

Again, what does this have to do with CHINA? Just because other countries are doing it and we aren't talking about those countries right now, what does that matter?

Because it makes us look like hypocrites. Also it puts into light the idea that free speech is not as universally valued as we like to think. Even in Western countries free speech is under attack. Hard to get on that free speech high horse and criticize other countries when open intellectual discussion is attacked and suppressed right here at home.

so morey immediately deleted his tweet.

what we have here is an impulse decision by a man who just felt the need to let his 225k followers know how he feels, and as a result rended asunder all the work yao ming et al had put into building a relationship with china. beyond sports, basketball was the vehicle through which we could change things.

but no, as per usual, some guy wakes up one morning, scratches his balls, brushes his teeth, and decides to torch the bridge

cuz he felt like tweeting something, which he later deleted

Only a hypocrite if you agree with what's happening. If you vote for governments that have deals with these countries.

Our journalists being imprisoned, disappearing? There are degrees of what's happening.

You don't ignore worse cases just because you have some things to clean up.

Totally different situations... I mean it's not like the US has a history of flat out murdering people using their freedom of speech to criticize the country, right? :-?

RIP Fred Hampton. Free Ramsey Orta.
