Totally different situations... I mean it's not like the US has a history of flat out murdering people using their freedom of speech to criticize the country, right?![]()
RIP Fred Hampton. Free Ramsey Orta.
So can't criticize China... Nope. Have to ignore them.
No matter what other countries are doing, have to turn a blind eye.

"Imagine USA in a similar situation and imagine how we would react.
Imagine we lost a war that was not a war where we were the ones attacked. They took NYC and kept it as their country. 150 years later its back and a part of the USA but a group of people there are protesting because they dont like certain USA policies and think they are bad (you can pick whatever policy you want depending on your political affiliation). Do you think USA citizens would be happy to have people from other countries that dont really know all the information to be cheering for the protesters? Does that mean the protesters are completely wrong? No, there is just a lot to this".
US Citizens have the freedom of the press, so the answer would be both - some Americans would care, some would not. That isn't similar to China at all.
People are not aware that the control of censorship is several tiers higher in China than any Western country. There is hardly any duality in China compared to the United States.
Anyway, this is a silly question because in USA they would at least consider a referendum. NYC would likely be able to govern itself as well (Hong Kong does not). So to answer the question - yes, some citizens absolutely would be happy. Like - what? That is America's history, it is filled with protest and duality.
The post that is quoted is shallow because it is saying to imagine a similar situation but is failing to point out how drastically different USA and China are in regards to domestic policy.
Freedom of press? Ever heard of Alex Jones and what happened to his social media and PayPal accounts?
Is this freedom of press?
https://youtu.be/_fHfgU8oMSo
Or CNN that has been caught fabricating news a million times?
Don't learn history from the TV, try reading about Chinese history and then get back to this Hong Kong circus.

Well obviously this argument makes sense, it says so right in the Constitution:
"Social media or PayPal or 'fake news' CNN shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Would this be like Trump banning Cheetos ?
Yes. And then executing Alec Baldwin and sticking Mormons in education camps. And don't speak out against Fox News or they'll take your internet and driver's license.
The people of China only put up with it because the growth over the last 30 years has been insane. It's slowing now and companies are moving to South East Asia and India where labour is 1/3 the cost.
Xi clamping down tighter and tighter because he knows the people won't put up with it much longer. The communist party in China is going to look real ugly in 10 years or so.
Damn

So? A league filled with African Americans didn’t want a racist owner. Not to mention the PR backlash and financial aspect. I guess that’s similar to an authoritarian government banning an animated children’s movie

Personally my thoughts on the matter goes as far as this: Hong Kong is a symbol of British imperialism in the West that shouldn't exist and what China does with what's rightfully there's is their business. As a citizen of the West the criticism of China to me is a criticism of people lashing out against Western imperialism similar to the massive hate for Zimbabwe and the massive lashing out against South Africa when they said they were going to start forcing people to sell the government land.
You brought up Chinese freedom of speech violations as a whataboutism, deal with that same energy back (IDK what started this all I just saw your comment and felt it was a bit arrogant).

The CCP bots are all over the internet slamming the NBA. Silver should have come out with an even stronger statement burning bridges with China and keeping his credibility in his biggest marker, North America. China is literally turning into 1930s Germany day by day and people have to stand up against them eventually.

Damn ... this statement from a ESPN story.
"We're strongly dissatisfied and oppose Adam Silver's claim to support Morey's right to freedom of expression," the statement read. "We believe that any remarks that challenge national sovereignty and social stability are not within the scope of freedom of speech."
You have idiots in the US talk about state secession (national sovereignty) all the time (I mean, I do live in Texas) but the federal government doesn't start taking things like social security or medicare away from citizens who talk about secession.

Why specifically the Lakers?
Idk I was driving and heard the 710 Espn LA crew bring it up as breaking news. They went right to commercial so I didn’t get to hear the rest after that point. Banning access to the nba all together might become a thing in China this year which would be wild.
Imagine in America if like Game of Thrones last season (before the hate) was canceled by the government. Would be political officials being knocked off left and right

Yes they still have consequences. Should also be noted no other country other then the US has freedom of speech even just in regards to not being thrown in jailTheDoors24 wrote:ILikeLollies wrote:DaPessimist wrote:

100% this.
It irritatates me to no end that people think free speech means you can say what you want without ramifications.
Free speech just means you don't have to worry about going to jail for life or being executed.ropjhk wrote:
Singapore is very authoritarian in their own way and it works for them. I dunno if they are more authoritarian than the Chinese, but it can't be denied that their system has succeeded in raising the living standards of those who live there.
LOL, when youve been to as many shipyards in Singapore like I have you'll see that Singapore has a vast underclass, usually Indian or Bangladeshi, that almost borders on servitude.
Amen. Tons of people use freedom of speech as a shield. They have consequences. Right or wrong.

So all the current citizens, who have lived in a different situation? **** them? All those journalists, bloggers, etc, who have spoken out against Chinese human rights issues, you're basically signing their death sentence).
There's no whataboutism. China regularly prevents any criticism of their government and journalists who persist often are never seen again. There's no defending that. That's wrong.

The NBA is not the government. The Chinese government is the one putting the screws on the NBA (and onto Chinese companies that deal with the NBA).
Like other people have said in this thread you have a freedom of speech in the US but not necessarily a freedom from consequences from your speech. What people mean is that the government specifically should not punish an individual for saying something controversial - private organizations are different as they may have their own standards.

So, if another mass shooting happens, another innocent life is taken or any of the sort happens in this country, the league should stay away from any recognition because it’s a political issue?
That’s a strange way of thinking, buddy. These social justice issues were what built the league in the first place from the 50s, 60s on.
I'm sorry, but when an American decides to bring out the "Social Justice" line, I just gotta say something....
How about all the Black people who are in jail for smoking weed and a White Havard rapist is not?
Don't talk to me about social justice, when your country is probably MORE backwards than half of the world. Every major country has healthcare and doesn't pay a fortune for it. It's actually despicable to see some of the stories of people who go homeless can't they can't pay their medical bill.... Veterans, consistently left to dry.... Where's the respect my veterans talk when their benefits get cut.... I mean it's just irony at it's best.
What country with 2 billion cameras, well the UK does have that too.....and the US was spying on everyone's communication, just like China does.... it was just hidden from the official public. There is no difference.
I could go on and on and on..... but look at the mirror before you start sling ****.
If you said the same thing about China no one in China would hear it.
In the USA, and the rest of the free world, we have a chance to learn and voice out concerns and potentially make a difference.
You hear about it, but does it make any difference..... I mean these have been issues for the past 25 years, no one has changed the system.
