Because their reaction is ridiculous. Random employee makes a random tweet and the Country of China wants to ban the NBA?

China looks incredibly thin-skinned here.

There are 30+ GM's in the NBA. Morey is nobody special. He isn't even a team owner. So yes, he's just a random NBA employee with no social or political power.

The fact that THE NATION OF CHINA took such offense to a random tweet is laughable at best.

Exactly. If it wasn't this it was going to be something else eventually.

I'm not seeing China as some special evil for doing what authoritarian regimes would all do when faced with a situation like this. This all sounds like shoddy justification to invade China and I pray to god that's not what it is. At the end of that day I'm about action, what do you want done about the situation because I'll totally admit both sides are bad and the only proper solution to me would be if Hong Kong was introduced back into China proper. It might suck, but it seems more "right" than the alternative.

Are you talking specifically about Western support for HK, or about the HK protestors themselves?

I'm certain that to the HK protestors, their fight for 'democracy' (as I have already explained in a previous post, it is not democracy as most Westerners conceive of it, but a restructuring of the current electoral system to be more fair and less Beijing biased) might implicitly be 'defending western imperialism', but to them that is likely merely a technical point when faced with being subsumed completely by an authoritarian regime that has no qualms about genociding people because they didn't have the good grace to be born Han Chinese.

To the protestors, it's about making sure Hong Kong isn't fully subsumed before 2047 as per the terms China agreed to (that they've been busy violating, and due to the structure of the government, is basically unstoppable).

But if you're suggesting that the protestors demands are illegitimate because they implicitly defend western imperialism, that seems like a problematic and dismissive stance to me.

Also, what is the 'alternative' you refer to?

In the short run, this drastic action by China pretty much has sent the message to all global US companies that is doing business in China. That is, if anyone speaks ill of China, we will have zero problem cutting ties with you. I suspect that pretty much every American who has a high profile position in the US will avoid talking about China/Hong Kong on twitter or any other platform.

Yes, but there is an overarching effect. China has pretty much silenced any other high profile American (who works for a company doing business with China) to shut up about Hong Kong. And they will succeed as no one will want to be the next Morey.

Well that was my original point before you took us down this rabbit hole of Imperialism. Morey's just a private American citizen. There is no getting involved. For all we know, he was eating a bowl of after dinner ice cream suffering the net trying to keep up on world affairs and he accidentally hit the like button, then deleted it. He might feel that way, but there's no evidence this was part of some vast government conspiracy paid for by Soros and CNN to overthrow Trump and pin it on the Chinese.

And now a $4,000,000,000 NBA Chinese venture is cancelled (for now, they'll bring it back at some point I assume).

No one thinks this is part of a vast conspiracy to overthrow Trump. It's part of a clearly defined pattern of America and Western Democracies supporting worldwide European imperialism though. Do I think Morey just did it without thinking? Of course. Do I think the cultural support of European imperialism is why he wasn't thinking when he sent that tweet out? Yup.

"No one thinks this is part of a vast conspiracy. Also, this is part of a vast conspiracy"

The USSR installed CPC government trying to put down a protest by the citizens of Hong Kong, a territory the UK handed over peacefully a long time ago, has nothing to do with the West. Russia has more of a hand in the current protests, because if the KMT wasn't overthrown, there wouldn't be any protests. So at least be honest about your conspiracies, this is the Eastern Imperialists (Russias) fault.

I don't agree with that. It's China's fault. The people in Hong Kong were used to living in a free society when the UK owned HK, and China agreed to keep it free when the Brits handed it over. Now Peking is clamping down, and the young people don't like it.

And the more Peking tries to stifle dissent, the more dissent there will be. Funny how that works.

I suspect that to a certain extent, the NBA has folded already. They are probably instructing all the teams and players to not talk about China over twitter or other social media platforms. Imo, if this happened (and it seems like it with everyone being silent), then that is already half the concession.

Why is this a surprise?

I've stated previously, where are all the other big international corporations which have a big precense in China not speaking up?

There should be no reason for the Rockets or the NBA to cower to China's threats, however, as with anything there are consequences. Is it right? No, of course not, but anyone who has followed China and it's history with doing similar over the years (at times to entire countries, by threatening to cease of businesses owned by the respective country and stopping tourism there) should not be surprised, and this includes the NBA.

This isn't a matter of simply pointing the finger at China as though they are the big bad wolf here, being that they have shown this type of capability for some time in many other instances, it's the fact that many have chosen to ignore it as long as it doesn't affect their own bottom line. You allow a certain precedent to happen, this is what the result becomes.
Why so serious?

Dunno if anybody has mentioned The Athletic yet but what they're doing to stifle people trying to comment on this issue is pathetic. They're another one for sure part-owned by Chinese companies.

Incorrect. Because, for example, the Lakers are doing a "gay pride" night or two at Staples Center this year.

This is a social/political type issue that has nothing to do with basketball. But the whole night at the arena will be themed and focused on that issue.

I'm sure the broadcast will talk extensively about it as well.

That's the type of thing they are referring to. You cannot just avoid that. It's a part of the NBA product.
