Jerami Grant

Post#1 » by NuggetsWY » Sun Jul 28, 2019 11:34 am

A nice into for Nuggets' fans to Grant's game. In the linked article, he is called the most underrated small forward in the NBA. He seems more like a combo-forward as do Vanderbilt & Porter (gives the Nuggets a lot of flexibility at forward).

I've copied Grant's section below the link.

https://fadeawayworld.net/2019/07/27/all-nba-underrated-1st-team/

Jerami Grant comes from an elite basketball family, son of Harvey Grant, nephew of Horace Grant and brother of Jerian Grant. Grant has improved every year and became more of a two-way weapon than just a defensive specialist. The wing is using his defensive versatility to guard up to 4 positions and now drills the three at 39% as of last season. No one talks about the solidness in a young player who moves well without the ball on cuts and blocks shots with ease.

Jerami has a great chance to thrive with the Denver Nuggets next season. Grant could vie for a starting spot too because he’s only going to continue to grow as the stat sheet stuffer at heart. The Nuggets finally found their wing for the future. The league should be on the watch.

Grant natural position is PF, no doubt about it. But I will be lucky to see him THIS SEASON temporarily playing at least 10+ SF minutes until Milsap is still here and until MPJ improve enough. Even starting SF option have a sense in 2019-20.

In today's game he can play 3-5. High motor, good athleticism, disruptive on defense, and a classy individual.

Vanderbilt & Grant at forward? Same height - Grant has a 7'3" wingspan & Vanderbilt has a 7'1" wingspan - sound like a nice defensive pairing and offense is looking good with Grant and promising with Vanderbilt.

Add in Porter at 6'10" and a 7' wingspan and if he works out, especially on defense; we'll have some nice forwards.

Add in Craig as a nice wing defender that can also switch up onto most PFs and even some centers --- our forward position has some nice prospects in the long run --- if everything works out.

Grant seems like a sure thing though - and I'll take him at either forward slot.

Denver Nuggets’ Mason Plumlee excited to form formidable reserve frontcourt with Jerami Grant

According to this article, Jeramy Grant will not be SF starter as I hope. I don't care actually about his starter/bench status, but I want to see him playing 30+ minutes per game.

Talking about SF starting spot, I wish it goes to Porter, not Barton.

I'm okay with Grant coming off the bench - at the beginning of the year. Malone is very slow to make changes. We should all remember the first couple of years with Jokic. But I honestly believe Grant will finish the year as a starter. Perhaps he finishes as the starting SF, I don't know. Assuming our bench includes Plumlee, Grant, Vanderbilt, Craig, Beasley, Morris - that should be a nice defensive unit.

I really think he’s best at the four. When OKC had Melo and Patterson, they tried to put grant at the three. It’s just not the best fit for him. He’s much better as an additional rim protector than he is out on the wing defending guys. Then again, maybe that won’t be as much of an issue if Denver doesn’t play a switch everything defense.

No doubt PF is his natural spot, and as a backup, he can be more effective as stretch five in small-ball rotations than as big-SF. But this season is special, with PF Millsap and C Plumlee expiring, and SF rookie MPJ too inexperienced. So, no matter how worse he is at SF offense, I think he is still better than Barton as SF, especially in defense.

Nice write-up but nothing new here, does have a hopeful outlook and paints a good spin from a Denver perspective

Questions abound for Grant - Nuggets' fans, at least many of them, do not know much about his game. In OKC, he ran the baseline a lot. He has a nice shooting touch, including 3pt shooting: 39-55-71 last year. He's a decent rebounder, but not great. He even gets a block plus per game. His biggest question on offense might be his ball handling - but he hasn't been asked to do a lot of that and it doesn't seem likely that'll be important in Denver.

His defense is a positive stat in DWS, DBPM, etc.

Perhaps the most of the questions revolve around his minutes. At the start of the season, he looks to be Millsap's primary backup. Will he get some SF minutes too? It seems unlikely based on the depth we have at SF, but one never knows what Malone's going to do. The biggest question in my mind is; where & how much will he be playing at the end of the year.

It's a contract year so he'll want to look good. Here's hoping he does just that and that Denver can then keep him.

There wasn’t a team that signed/traded for a player this offseason that was a better for than Grant.

I would not go that far, because the 2019 NBA offseason was arguably the most spectacular NBA offseason ever, but Nuggets Grant trade was probably the most underrated move this summer, especially if Malone finds the way to give him and Millsap 25+ mpg both, and if we re-sign him next summer.

That was supposed to say better "fit" not better "for". Davis is a great fit for the lakers but the cost they gave could be crippling if something happens. George and Leonard will probably work fine, but they do both play the same position. I don't think Jimmy Butler is as much of an upgrade over Josh Richardson as some do. I'm not a huge fan of Kyrie. Durant would have been great if not for the achilles. Denver was able to get grant for a fair price but it does't impact their bench, locker room or immediate future in the way the other players do.

Have to say so far I've been disappointed with Grant this season, he's only had two decent games IMO. I know it takes time to get acclimated to new teammates, new coaches, new schemes but I like to see a bit more production from him being he's going against the other teams bench players.

I will have to re-evaluate him closer to the All-Star break but if he's not upping his game by then we may see him just exercise his PO and we can get him at a reasonable price for next year.

Grant offense stats drop is shocking so far compared to the previous season. FG% drop from 54% and 50% in the past two seasons to just 42% this season (3p% drops from 40% to 25%!?). He is part of our improved defense this season so far of course, but that would happen anyway if we used another defensive specialist Jarred Vanderbilt instead of him.

Grant's adoption of the Nuggets system obviously needs some time, but I'm also afraid that there are some more serious issues. Despite have elite 3p% last season, Grant was never been an elite 3p shooter. He takes full advantage of his good movement for a big guy to score open threes when opponents defense is focussed on Westbrook and George, and the same you can say from his alley-oop dunks when he sneaks so often using same advantages. Also, Grant defensive skills are much well used vs best opponents forwards. But if Grant played in Oklahoma 6th man role instead of 5th starter, despite playing the same minutes and playing vs opponents 2nd units his numbers would be worse, because he is that type of the player which I just tried to explain. As OKC 6th man opponents defense would be focused on him, and his defensive potential would be wasted on some opponent bench players. The same problem Denver has now with Grant playing with Plumlee and Morris instead with Jokic and Murray, so no sneaky open 3pt shots and dunks which make Grant so efficient in Oklahoma.

Honestly, I don't know how to solve this problem in the best way. To put Millsap on the bench would be a shocking decision for the team which just decided to pay him $30M for another season. Maybe the solution is to put Grant on the SF starter spot, but we need to pump Barton trade value and develop MPJ. Or just put Grant intentionally to underperform from the bench entire season, which would decline his market value, and sign a new contract with him next summer with granted PF starting job since next season (with Millsap exit).

Grant has looked poor on offense for a few games now. He has also been excellent at times earlier. Everyone on this team has slipped at times and they are 6-2.

As much as I have preached against Barton, he is having a hell of season so far. There is no way Barton is giving up the starting small forward position at this point, so forget about Grant moving into Barton's position.
Canned in Denver.
