Also how dumb was it to bat Torres 5th? Cole wanted nothing to do with him in the first inning, so he walked him on 4 pitches. Probably a different inning if Torres is hitting 3rd.

I wish somebody would tell Didi that he does NOT have to swing at the first pitch! He does it all the time. And if I notice it... smh

Adam Ottavino is the new George Frazier! do not pitch him again vs Houston.

I would honestly bat Judge 3rd and move Hicks to 2nd. Hicks always has a good approach and rarely chases even if his timing is a little off right now. AB and the analytics are overthinking putting Judge 2nd. Judge and Torres should be back to back in the order right now followed by Stanton or Sanchez. I'd move one of Edwin or Gardy out of the lineup and the other back down to the bottom with Didi. Probably have to sacrifice Edwin so you can get Stanton in the DH spot and keep the same fielding alignment.

I normally don't complain about lineups but that was just really poor decision. Nothing about it makes any sense.
Gardner in the first inning, could have also bunted. But Analytics hates the bunt. Second and third with Encarnacion up, would have forced Cole to throw strikes. If not then Torres is up with the bases loaded.
I am not a fan of many parts of baseball analytics. Some areas just make no sense to me. Like batting average no longer being important. Like really? So a hitter batting .230 with a low OBP but hits for power, is better than the hitter batting .290 with a higher OBP also with power? The former is boom or bust, while the latter is doing more with the bat.
Yankees have too many hitter who are the former. That doesn't work in the post-season.

You guys caught a nice break tonight. Tanaka will be fully rested for tomorrow and so will Paxton if you need to go to him.

Analytics got the Yanks here despite the injuries all season so they work.
However, analytics should always be paired with the eye test. Chad throws less than 5 Balls for 2+ innings, let him finish out the inning. Gardy batting 3rd? What a joke!

I mean u can say the same for the Astros, extra day of rest for verlander and Cole. This doesn't just benefit us.

Yea I never understood why Judge bats 2nd, it's a waste in my opinion. He should be batting 3rd or 4th. I get that he gets on base alot but he's a guy that drives runs in. How many times have we seen solo home runs from him? Too much times. He had 27 home runs and only 55 RBIs. That is very odd, usually guys have 27 home runs and atleast 75 RBIs. He needs to bat 3rd or 4th period, with Torres batting in front or behind him.

ccvle wrote:On deeper thought, I dont know if i can even be mad at this team. Houston is clearly the better team here, both pitching and hitting wise. Both Verlander and Coles are having historical season and our pitching overall came very close to matching them.
Some thoughts on our hitter/position players.
Brett Gardner - no disrespect to Gardner but it is time to move on. Yes, he walks, he takes pitches and he has added some power over the past few years but he lacks the ability to hit against good pitching. He post season battling avg is .200 with a. 250 obp. Last time we won a championship in 2009, Gardner was the 9th hitter. Today he is battling 3rd. I'm in no way trying to blame our failure all on Gardner. Heading into this season, he wasnt expected to be more than just the fourth outfielder. I respect his leadership. his hardwork. But something is not right with the picture when Gardner is battling 3rd against verlander and cole.
Hicks - same as Gardner. Great regular season player that can grind out at bats, hit with some powers but just doesnt have the ability to make contact against good pitching. His post season battling average is just as bad as Gardner (much smaller sample size though)
Sanchez - one of the most overrated hitters on our team. Every once in a while he will go on a 30-40 games tear and everyone will proclaim him to be the best hitter on the team, then he will disappear the rest of the season. I dont buy the "if healthy" argument.
I cannot agree more with this comment regarding Brett Gardner. Why is he batting 3rd in ALCS.
I just don't get Cashman's infatuation with Gardner. I bet he'll sign another 2 years with Yankees.
Hicks should get a pass since he is the best defensive OF we have but I do get your point.
And Sanchez... You maybe right, he is getting there with this deep funk he is in for last 2 seasons.
I really hope at least 2 of our big bats other than Torres come alive and make it a series.
Long time visitor and first time commenting.
Let's go Knicks !!

I agree, I believe the Yankees needed that 2-0 start to build some momentum. They seemed like their energy was sapped and I could see them winning only one of the next 2 games, but the end result will come up short year again this year against Houston.

gotta keep the faith. We have our best playoff pitcher going tonight against their most shaky top of the line pitcher. Then they can only pitch Verlander and Cole 2 out of the next 3 games and we've shown we can at least get guys on base against those 2. This series is far from over. If i know this team like I think I do after watching them all year, I know they're not going to just lay down and quit like last year.

Nick Turturro is the man, bringing that energy to the stadium, it wasnt there in game 3.
