So Beal is on a 4 year - $134 mil contract now for his age 26-29 seasons. Massive win

I really had no expectation that he was going to take an extension (edit: ...this offseason given the money that we could offer him vs. a potential supermax). 'Bout to start dancing around with the lampshade on my head over here.

I thought he was going to stay. If you hear him talk, he loves DC. And he just had one of his best seasons. No player wants to pass up an opportunity to have his own team. Now we can move forward to the next stage of building a contender.

Two year extension but PO on the last year. Smart move by him and hopefully we surround him with more talent next season and the years to come.

My arithmetic makes it $128m. But, yes, it's a good deal -- & surprising.

Love him. Basically a one year extension, but it's a chance for the FO to do...something, but more than anything it's an opportunity for him to play a full season with a healthy John Wall again during a season without trade pressure, which is just great. Obviously, if that year doesn't go well, the pressure will be there to move him the following year, but it's w/e.

By signing this deal, Washington can officially treat this year as a rebuilding and next year as a year they want to win

I posted this on July 26th.

nate33 wrote:I've been thinking it over, and the best move for Beal is to sign a 1+1 extension (2nd year a player option). It's pretty much a no-brainer. The upsides are multiple and the downside is almost nil.

As it stands now, his existing contract ends in 2021, his 9th season, so that he's not eligible for a 35% max on his next contract. By extending his existing contract for one more year to 2022, he'll become an unrestricted free agent after his 10th season and he'll be eligible for the 35% max from any team with cap room. By making it a 1+1 extension, he gets the added security of another year of salary in case he has a catastrophic injury between now and 2022.

Another advantage is that, by 2022, there will be more more clarity on the Wizards' direction under their new GM. By then, we should know if Hachimura, Bryant, Brown and their 2020 (high) pick are legit starters/stars or merely rotation players. We'll know if John Wall is close to his old self, or maybe he'll be moved by then and the Wizards will be making a play for a max salary free agent in 2021 or 2022 to join Beal, Hachimura, Bryant, etc.

Finally, it resolves a lot of angst in the organization. An extension, even a short one, would silence all the troublemakers trying to stir stuff up. It says that Beal is dedicated to the organization within reason, but understandably isn't going to commit the rest of his life if the organization isn't doing it's part to get better.

The only downside to extending now would be if he makes All-NBA this season or next season. If he did so, he would miss out on the opportunity to sign a 35% supermax (with the Wizards only) that would kick in in 2021, a year earlier than his 10th season. But ultimately, that's only about $7M lost, and the benefits he gains are 2 years of injury insurance and the opportunity to hit the open market as an unrestricted free agent after his 10th season. Also, it's going to be very hard to make All-NBA on a team that will probably have 28 wins.

Another big upside from the Wizards' perspective is that Beal's trade value just went up. He is locked into a reasonable deal for 3 more years.

The extension has some pretty restrictive language to prevent a trade. It has a 15% trade kicker and some weird language that allows him to opt in on the final year at the latest possible moment, so that the trade kicker is a percentage of his more expensive final season.

It's not quite a no-trade clause, but it definitely makes it harder to trade him.

Here is Bobby Marks on the subject:
Bobby Marks wrote:As part of the extension, Bradley Beal has a 15% trade kicker. The guard also has unique language when it comes to the player option in 2022-23. From when the extension is signed and until June 2022. Beal can decline or exercise the option. Because a player option is excluded when factoring in the value of the trade bonus at the time of the trade, opting-in to the last year would increase the bonus owed. The trade kicker could range between $6-9M. Beal is not eligible to be traded until after the 2019-20 season because the first year of his extension is greater than 5% from his 2020-21 salary. Beal will also receive a 50% advance of his $34.5M and $37.3M (if he opts-in) salary up front when the extension begins. Beal currently has two-years left ($27.1M and $28.75M) on the original $127M max contract that was signed in 2016.

Congrats BB! It's a good deal for the team and for him, at least it looks that way right now. BB now becomes a great recruiting chip for the team.

My man! I told y'all we shouldn't panic and trade Beal. He's a special dude both on and off the court.

Last night, I took this photo of BB signing autographs at a player meet-and-greet for season ticket holders. No wonder he has a smile on his face. He's about to really get paid!
