Predict Blazers # of wins in the 2019-2020 season

Post#1 » by monopoman » Fri Oct 18, 2019 3:55 am

Well figured I would set this thread up now that pre-season has 100% concluded, and we have 6 days before the 1st game of the season.

I am betting on 49 wins for the Blazers I think wins will be tougher to come by for this team slightly due to the west getting a bit more competitive, and the Blazers having to work to implement new guys into the roster. Once we get to game 82 in the season I will bump this thread, and we can see who was the closest.

Most of the odds makers have the Blazers at 46.5. Some have us at 45.5. Seems like easy money to me. Maybe I'm just a homer.

The Blazers have over-achieved the experts' predictions by quite a bit the last few years and I really like this years squad. Hard to predict with Nurkic's comeback time uncertain, Whiteside looking just OK, and lots of new pieces... I'll go with 52.

Might as well be optimistic and say 54 wins. I think they could have trouble if they have certain guys lose significant time to injuries, but they have the pieces to be better than last year as well. And while some teams got better, there have been some injuries to good players so it might be more possible to get on a win streak than we realize.

I'm going to go with 42 wins and getting into the POs as an 8th seed.

I think the lack of continuity that buoyed them the last 3-4 years is going to materialize as a dip in the standings. I also think this could be the year that we see Lillard and/or CJ miss a little more time than we've been used to due to injury, load management, etc...the brutality of the first 20 games being on the road could be a big factor too. I wouldn't be completely shocked to see them with only 5-7 wins during that stretch.

I hope I'm wrong. I hope they win 58 games and are completely healthy, synergistic the whole season, and that Nurkic comes back better than ever January 1st.

It’s an awfully tough western conference. Expecting to win 50 games is a tall order with the two LA teams, Denver and Utah likely better than Portland.

Put me down with 41 games in a bunch of teams hovering around .500

I don't accept the premise that Utah and Denver are better than the Blazers. Certainly, a case can be made for the LA teams and Rockets. Nuggets are even with the Blazers at best. Jazz are in competition with Warriors as best of the rest. The 8th spot is up in the air. I expect a tight battle between Spurs, Mavs, Kings, and Pelicans.

There are also upcoming teams like Phoenix and Sacramento that likely will ensure the team with the
beat record in the league will likely be from the east. That Phoenix team that looked so good in beating
Portland in the pre-season played without Ayton, Booker and Rubio .

I do think the two LA teams will eventually emerge from a crowded pack but Portland finishing with 41-44
wins in such a loaded conference will be doing as well as expected. Just no cupcakes for even the also
rans like the Wolves and Grizzlies are not bad teams and have talent.

Suns, Grizzlies, and the like will be tough fighters until they are officially losers. By January or February, we will have 5 or 6 official losers in the west that will give easy wins. That's the way it works every year. Half the teams in the east will be good for some more wins.

I'm going with 52 wins. This should put Blazers 3-4th in the west.

I am seeing Whiteside as a bad fit, and don't expect Nurk to be 100% this year. I am thinking that Simons, CJ, Baze, Hezonja, and Collins have career years, but they win 38 and miss the playoffs.

So far, we have 49, 50, 52, 53, 46, 54, 42, 41, 48, 48, 41, 38, and 52. That's an average of 47. I had no idea there was so much pessimism about the team. I thought after years of people calling for irrational changes that all the current rational changes would lead to some optimism.

I don't think 47 is that critical of the team, they won 53 last year but we had a lot of roster turnover and we are relying on guys either stepping up and/or pieces like Bazemore and Mario making an impact immediately to touch that 53+ wins again. To make it even worse the West got better by quite a bit I think there are tougher games in the West overall this year than last.

Either way almost everyone here (We do have one with 38 wins and 2 with 41) is higher than a lot of projections and pundits think of this team with some of them having us out of the playoffs and as low as 41 or less wins.

Not to mention we did very well against the Clippers and Lakers last year and both teams improved in the off-season by a good margin. OKC and Warriors got worse but some other West teams got better also.

I'll say 49. I think top seed in the West only ends up with 54 or so and top 6 are between 48-54. I think the Blazers offense may be the best in the NBA this season. If the defense can stay near the middle of the league they'll be ok during the regular season.
