Where or when did I ever say that we should have made the Nets trade him here?

Calm down  You guys are so on the edge about anything negative towards the Knicks that you're taking stuff unrelated to the Knicks as some attack.

This is the around the NBA thread. Expect me to flood this with topics / highlights from AROUND THE NBA

I had so much hope for this guy. Getting that contract did him no favors.

Yep. You pretty much have their strategy down pat. I don’t HATE it, I just don’t prefer it.

So, guys younger than Randle or even Payton, both who are 24/25?

On the whole I agree with you guys, but taking chances on 2nd contract guys like Vonleh, Mudiay, Mario, Payton and Portis, and then going more in on Randle, is a form of doing that. A variation.

Also, I'm going to give it this year to see if they take back any young players IF they are able to deal some of these contracts.

Randle is on a 2 year deal really and plays no D. The concept I don't mind, but the player isn't a building block on a contender.

Payton is the definition of just a guy.

I think he's looked a lot better on that end the last 2 games of the pre-season. Not saying much but I'm a little more optimistic than I was.

I think he went from looking like an albatross to just being plain bad or below average. I get the skill he has. Coast to coast king, can playmake, attack from perimeter or low post, shoot a little, etc. I just don't like 4's that don't shoot 3's consistently or switch on D.

Just wait until he settles in and gets comfortable with the split action

Dude was 39% on catch and shoot as the focal point with the Nets

Good for them bc it would have been foolish to sign Barnes but not Heild

Looking back at the Pelicans they had a chance to build around AD even though I liked Jamal Murray more than Buddy he's really been a good breakout player in Sactown. Pels could have had Jrue Buddy AD and kept their picks. That Cousins trade was so dumb

Second contract chances where you don't secure Bird rights really aren't adding young pieces in a meaningful way though. I'm higher on Randle than Mecca and IMO when the ball eventually lands in RJ's hands for key moments his value will be augmented. He's very toolsy but not the best decision maker. I think we should have pursued another move like that one or taken on salary for picks.

It's pretty clear the Knicks are gearing up for an AD pursuit prior to a Giannis pursuit. I think at least the 2020 pursuit ends up like 2019. Knicks just haven't built enough yet.

Base around 86 million + incentives for Hield. That seems in the right ballpark in this salary environment.

Hoo boy though that's a lot of money. Good time to be a second/third tier player in the NBA.

It's contracts like that that make me agree with Pills' strategy more than I disagree.

Why pay Hield when you can get a real star for moderately more?

Yes, the real stars are harder to get, but the juice is worth the squeeze.

I mean, Buddy is a pretty elite scorer. 59 TS% 42.7% from 3 on over 8 a game is pretty insane. He’s worth every penny of that contract and arguably a value deal. Shooting at an elite level is worth gold.
