If they can get a big that can slow down Embiid however they could be hard to beat.
Seems either brash or naive to not be scared of the Clippers right now.
And why are we still attaching this mythos to Embiid as if a bigman can make a difference in a playoff series? We just watched the Celtics slow down Embiid with Enes Kanter and Daniel Theis as their two centers. They just threw a double at him everytime he got the ball in the post and he either turned it over or deferred the possession to one of the other 4 guys. Eventually he got so frustrated, he backed out to the perimeter and shot deep bricks the entire night. That's how easy it is to contain/frustrate a bigman. That's the same thing that's going to happen in the playoffs.
Judging based on one game is bound to lead to wrong conclusions. Last year Embiid was also bad in the opening game against Boston and in the end averaged 29/15 over the year against them. Especially since he was obviously rusty since he hasnt trained much in the summer. If he had hit a couple of his jumpers and had the usual FT percentage he would had 21 points in 23 minutes which is excellent.
The Celtics defended him was gimmicky, having a player abandon his man to double team Embiid should in principle lead to an open shot, which is how Embiid got his assists. If the team cant exploit a double team it is more of a coaching issue than a systemic problem imo. It is true that the Sixers have struggled in the past with that due to the lack of shooting and Brown not having a more structured offense. However if you can t exploit a double team there are not many offensive schemes you can run as a team.
It is hard to say at the moment how much of a problem this will be. In principle this will be the first year that Embiid will be playing with 4 shooters when Simmons sits so we will have to wait a couple of months to see.
If anything worries me with Embiid is his health, he was still rehabbing during the summer, and him not using hook shots which are the go to moves for post players and would allow him to score much easier against less athletic players like Gasol.
