The FO deserves a ton of credit for finding value in players other teams cast off - Carter, Kaminsky, Rubio, Baynes. What's most amazing to me is how well we're playing defensively despite not having players who are celebrated defenders in this league - but that's a credit to the coaching staff, I think. Frank's defense and rebounding have definitely been much better than I expected, while Carter's shooting has been way better than I expected.

The way things are going, James Jones has a shot at executive of the year, and Monty has a shot at Coach of the Year. Too much improvement from too many players for the guys up top not to get a lot of the credit.

Hopefully someone in the front office is smart enough to recognize that Executive of the Year is all fine and dandy but one year doesn’t mean much. If someone wants to list the moves that McD made that turned us into a 48 win team in 2013-14 it’s very similar to the kind of moves Jones has made. Difference is we got youthful cornerstones in Booker, Ayton, Oubre. Regardless as long as Jones and company doesn’t try and get cute and start making bad decisions later we should be fine.

Oubre's not that surprising to me because he was putting up about the same stats as when he started last season. I do expect his efficiency to start dropping toward more normal numbers for him, but he'll continue to get a lot of easy looks in transition and cutting with Ricky around.

Kaminsky is playing like the player he was drafted to be. Versatile on offense with passable rebounding and defense so far. He's done well abusing mismatches in the post, and I expect his 3 point percentage to get up in the mid-high 30s as he gets more shots up. His production has surprised me, but he did play well when the Hornets gave him consistent playing time over the last few months of last season.

Carter is the most out-of-nowhere to me. He was pegged as an end of bench rotation/high energy practice body, and he's played really well with his opportunity. He has plenty to improve on as a point guard, but he's looking like a baby Beverley with his 3-point shot and defensive intensity. It's going to be interesting to see him and Jerome compete for minutes once he's healthy.

Goes from a 7’1 tower to a hobbit in game. He’s learning how to operate the PG position to find the creases in defense. He’ll learn when to slip the PnR better, when to flare out for a mid range jumper, etc. Let him play 2K, he’ll come back a smarter player on the court :)

Yeah it's unreasonable to expect oubres current insane TS% to hold up but I do think it could stay at a good level even after some normal regression. Really his biggest problem in the past was shooting some dumb mid range shots and the heat check 3s with a hand in his face. He's always been a dude that if he just stopped taking like 2 dumb shots a game it would really help him and it's possible he finally figured that out.

Looking like we dodged a bullet by not getting Rozier. He's been pretty inefficient for Charlotte.

What has been the biggest surprise so far?

Marks: The Suns. Their biggest offseason addition was not Ricky Rubio, Dario Saric, Aron Baynes or Kelly Oubre. That honor goes to new head coach Monty Williams. In Saturday's win against the LA Clippers without Rubio and Deandre Ayton, Williams used the next-man-up approach in steering the team to a win. Remember this is the same Phoenix that didn't win its second game until Nov. 2 last year.

Pelton: Even though I was higher on the Suns than most because of their strong statistical projections, I didn't expect them to start 2-2 against a difficult schedule with a win over the Clippers and a pair of one-point losses to Denver and Utah. Phoenix has been shockingly competent on defense and has thus far survived Ayton's suspension without missing a beat.

I don't believe the Suns were ever interested in Rozier. That was all to drive up his interest in FA. He didn't tick any of the boxes Jones was looking at.

The latest news article feim AZ Republic is reporting that Ayton keeps working out with Mark Bryant despite his suspension but godforbid he uses his time off to unwind playing a basketball video game. Smh. But when Devin Booker was winning gaming tournaments it was ok? Wth lol.

This would have been it for me if the Suns has gotten Rozier. Reminds me of Knight in terms of efficiency, except I feel Knight at least could get hot every now and then.
