Thankfully a short trip for our SEGABABA means we're about as rested as we can be and we have both reflected on what to improve and react accordingly tonight. Defense first, transition offense, make the right simple plays, and keep up our intensity. Sometimes the wounded opponent games can lure a team into complacency, but being depleted can make a team rally and play hard so hopefully we remain vigilant, resilient, and focused to executing our game plan on both ends.

No surprise. I presume the Spurs prepared for this and game-planned accordingly:

A slight change in the starting line-ups:

Our bench is noticeably outplaying our starters on the back of FIBA Patty.

I wish we could get FIBA Patty more often

Haha I hear you! With more guard options, he's back to playing a familiar role. Great energy off the bench, key shots. Got us going, kept us going.

It was a sort of walk in the part start by the first unit, and while the cohesion there continues to be a work in progress, our bench depth and energy came through.
The first unit has two new starters, DeMar at the SF, and an alternating PG, so there are changes they're adjusting to in real time. But also credit to our opponents who were active defensively, forcing LMA to set up outside the paint and then quickly doubling him which gave him fits in the first half. We settled too much for outside shots, and so it felt as if we were trying to win without exerting too much effort, and it showed.
Cue FIBA Patty's season and game-high 31 points on terrific efficiency from everywhere: 10-16FGs, 6-9 from 3, 5-5FTs. Our energy bench gave us 68 points, and 70 second half points showed our effort to drive (26-30FTs) which opened up the court for drive and kick in rhythm 3s. We are less efficient from the 3 so far this season, but we did shoot 35 in this game, and 92 shots overall - a good balance given our strengths. We pushed the ball more and found LMA in the paint for easy baskets and fouls. Once LMA got his shot rhythm at the FT line, his Js started falling more. We ended up with six players in double figures. On the other end, only 11 turnovers and 51 rebounds (15 on O) limited opponent chances.
Trey is averaging double his previous rebounding average, so that has been a boon. And though he took his shots, he still passed on several open ones, and looks to be guiding his Js in. Some cuts to the basket for dunks and shots in the key should help get him going. We know he has these tools in his game, so hopefully he gets more comfortable and doesn't overthink it and just shoots.
Beli started to get going later in the game which was a relief to see. Rudy: instant offense, and he was white hot in this game. DeMar the facilitator returned - 11 assists, top marks. He has a knack for providing what the team needs on O. DeMarre finally got some minutes, and showed an assertiveness on O drives and D awareness. He still looks like he lumbers about, but showed he has tools to be effective on both ends for us. He'll be particularly effective in half court situations on both ends.
Lonnie - two minutes. Pop said he was non-competitive in the previous game, and he drove to the basket on his first chance. We all want him to have regular minutes in the rotation, but in order to get them, he'll have to outplay vets ahead of him by making the most of his skill set and effort. Pop pushes guys he knows have so much more to give; the knock on Lonnie has been that he'd bring his full game in some spurts, disappear in others. It's a reminder that he'll have to respond with a consistent hunger that forces Pop to play him.
It was interesting to read Kerr's comments that Derrick doesn't know how good he can be, and Pop echoed it in that Derrick tries to please the coaches and should unleash his full game even if he makes mistakes along the way. He's expanded his game and grown so much in the last year. Knowing that he has untapped levels to his O is exciting because he's such a consistent, dogged defender that rewarding himself with more on the other end can only be good for his confidence and the team. He belongs. I can't wait to see super-mode Derrick.
We're finding ways to win games that we found ways to give away last season, so though we're a work in progress, we are collectively raising the floor defensively, and as we incorporate new players and adding styles of play that allow us to attack in a variety of ways.
NOTEWORTHY STATS OF THE NIGHT:
Trey with a new career-high 14 rebounds
