2020 Braves Off-season & Spring Training Thread....
For all our off-season discussion needs.
The Braves declined Billy Hamilton's $7 mill option and Julio Teheran's $12 mill option. They re-signed Flowers and Markakis to 1 year deals.

The Markakis signing is fair, but paying the extra $4 mil to keep Flowers didn't make much sense to me. I thought he was done last season. They like the way he frames pitches. Braves need to get a catcher that can do more.

I would have preferred to keep Cervelli as the back up option. Flowers bat numbers were down, he lead the league with 16 passed balls and his throwing out base runners percentage was below 20%.
Hopefully AA signs Grandal.
I didn't want to bring back Kakes, but I don't think LM will give AA enough to spend on a OF bat and a top line starter. Looks like it will be a Markakis/Duvall platoon in LF.

And I'm okay with a Kakes/Duvall platoon until Pache and/or Waters is ready. I'm guessing Pache is more likely to be the one that's ready first, because he's such a good fielder and seems to be more of a finished product.
Prime offseason goals are re-signing Donaldson and acquiring a starting catcher. Grandal would be a great pickup.

Front line starter too. Can't afford Cole, Strasburg. Probably not MadBum either.
Wish LM would let AA spend. Sign MadBum to a 3 year deal, re-sign JD to a 3 year deal, sign Grandal and Hamels to 2 year deals.

I was thinking Keuchel was coming back, but he'll probably go to the highest bidder. Honestly, with Wright being 24, I think they should let him sink or swim next season. And I'd be tempted to do the same with Bryse Wilson even though he's younger. Save money so they can "afford" to sign Grandal and Donaldson.

I'm $urprised - given that it's gonna cost a lot to get MadBum.

Not as much as Cole/Strasburg. MLB trade rumors is predicting a 4/$72 for MadBum. I'm good with that if LM lets AA spend more.
In fact after looking at MLB trade rumors 50 top FA predicitons and an article on Tomahawk Take on why not to resign Donaldson
, here is what I'd do this winter if AA can spend,
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/11/mlb-free-agent-predictions-2020.html
https://tomahawktake.com/2019/11/06/3-reasons-braves-not-re-sign-josh-donaldson/
Sign MadBum to the deal above. Sign Grandal 3/$51( 17 per). Don't resign Donaldson, he'll cost at least 25 per.
With that 25 mill that would have went to JD, sign Hamels( 2/30) and Moustakas(2/20).
MLB Trade rumors predicts both Hamels and Moustakas to the Braves on those exact deals. The project Grandal to the Reds.
I'm more on par with this, if we can get MadBum and Grandal. Also adding the experience of MadBum and Hamels to this staff, with both having tons of playoffs experience, both have won a WS. Would be really great for our young pitchers.
I'm also on board with adding two player at the cost of JD. JD's 25 = Hamels 15 and Moustakas 10.
Moustakas had a similar year to JD. JD had a higher WAR, Walks and OBP. Moustakas had 1 less error than JD, and 57 less strikeouts.
Mouk - 3.2 WAR 133 H 35 HRs 88 RBI .255/.329/.516/.845 53 BB 98 Ks 11 errors
JD - 6.1 WAR 142 H 37 HRs 94 RBI .259/.379/.521/.900 100 BB 155 Ks 12 errors
Bonus Moustakas is 3 years younger than JD.

Not a good thing for the Braves, but I don't see the big deal - since he didn't name any names. And AA's no rookie in these things.

It's nice to have flexibility. If they don't keep him, they can sign a 3rd baseman or they could move Riley back to 3rd and sign an OFer. Or they could go cheap and start Camargo at 3rd and keep Riley in the OF.

Ok, so that's how they can afford to sign MadBum.
Teheran's been really durable for a long time and has given up among the lowest NL batting averages allowed for several years, but he always seems on the verge of losing it - since he lost several MPH's on his fastball. I wish him well wherever he goes. He should get a standing O whenever he returns to Atlanta to pitch against the Braves.
