Not great, not terrible. More money than I'd like to spend on a back of rotation guy, but we gave up nothing and we're rather desperate for an established starter.
That said - he could get absolutely shelled in the AL East and exit the rotation by the all-star break. But then I suppose we just buy out his 2021 option.

Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

Excellent piece on what to expect from Chase Anderson coming to the Jays: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/instagraphs/chase-anderson-brings-an-improved-cutter-to-the-blue-jays/

How are you equating these two trades and situations as similar?
Forever clueless.

There are a bunch of 2 war level starters available that could be had on short term deals. Could have waited to see if something better was available first. The trade itself is ok, Spanberger is not good and Anderson is a big league starter, but I don’t understand the urgency to do this.
This assumes this trade would still be available weeks from now.
Also, I’m guessing the Jays have already spoken to the agents of free agent pitchers and likely know where the market will be at for those they’re interested in. Plus they probably like Anderson.

Yeah it may not have been available. Part of the reason for trading him may have been opening up a roster spot so that the Brewers didn't have to cut somebody else. I haven't been paying attention much but there are always roster crunch situations to take into account.
Another thing about free agency: everybody always thinks "next year's free agent market is going to be much better for buyers" but then when the next year rolls around, half the names we thought would be free agents have signed extensions with their current team (or the team they were traded to mid-season). The best free agent markets are always two or three years away. There won't be as many options available to us in free agency a year or two from now as some might think. And while it's great to have some money to extend our future stars, those dollars won't need to be outlayed until like 5 years from now, at the earliest. I'd be in favour of throwing around a bunch of front-loaded contracts (or trading for some highly paid vets) which won't prevent us from spending big on homegrown talent in 2024 and onward. I have zero interest in seeing the Jays be frugal for the next 2 years.

Agreed, AA already told them the landscape for free agency and trades...

Lol, you compared Jeff luhnow to shats.
And, for the record, it’s pretty clear
We traded stroman because a) he would have cost too much apparently in free agency and b) he was making too much money.
So, then we sign a worse starter who gets paid more.
Makes a tonne of sense except it makes zero sense at all. Just keep the fan favourite. Unfortunately shats once again showing why he is not fit to run our team.
Also, we had the worst season in terms of losses in 40 years. I think you need to look a little closer at our front office for those sans a clue.

Re: Jays trade for SP Chase Anderson
Anderson doesn't get paid more. Stroman will be paid more than him in 2020, and an awful lot more than him thereafter. And if we want to pay Stroman that awful lot more after 2020, we can!

**** your asterisk.

The Brewers were going to decline his option, like they did with Thames. So he would have been arb eligible for one more year, and MLBTR estimated a salary of $10.3m for him. There is a good chance this same trade would have been available, or he would have been non tendered, becoming a FA. Of course he may not have wanted to join the Jays if he were a FA for any number of reasons, so trading for him eliminates any choice for him, plus the Jays may have liked the 1+1 part of the deal as is, but at the end of the day it's $9m for a #4/5 starter before knowing how the market will play out. Keep in mind this is the same GM who signed Morales and Pearce in November/December, and then saw the market for 1B/DH completely bottom out a month later, so it's not like he couldn't have jumped the gun. There is history to suggest he has in the past.
Like I said though if Anderson is just a minor piece and they'll be spending on better starters the rest of the winter, then no problem. Have to wait and see on that.

This is a very shatkiny move. If they find better, they can always unload him later in the offseason.

I agree with this. By end of free agency , I think we’ll see better pitchers signed for less. The option year is intriguing I say. It’s getting a free look at the 2nd year. That said, I don’t see huge upside. Can’t truly gauge any deal though until we see how much payroll there was to work with.

Except you respond to everything I write - almost like a voyeur.
Anyway, I'll keep it on topic. I believe we should have kept the cheap all-star fan favourite in Stroman. Simple.
