I'm not sure if he's improving his trade value or making himself invaluable to a Hawks team desperate for consistent scoring.

But at 24 years old (and with a player option for next season), JP is setting himself for some attractive options next summer.

A team option instead of a player option would look real good right about now. This was touted as a bad signing by the Hawks which I didnt understand.

I didn't understand because I viewed it as a low risk signing. He's fit in nicely so far and is a bargain at his contract.

Zach Lowe wrote:Ten NBA things I like and don't like

Jabari Parker, rude

Parker, renewed in Atlanta, is announcing his power with a stone-faced blunt force. He has been perhaps the league's rudest dunker. I mean, this is just impolite.

Here, Parker sees Anfernee Simons and does not care. He barely slows down. He does not alter his path. You are either getting out of Parker's way, or he's embarrassing you. Parker has 33 dunks, trailing only Clint Capela, Anthony Davis (34 apiece) and fellow surly dunker Giannis Antetokounmpo (38), per tracking data.

The suspension of John Collins transformed Parker from bench curiosity into essential replacement starter. (The Hawks are splitting the rest of those power forward minutes between Vince Carter and De'Andre Hunter -- with Bruno Fernando even sopping up a few.)

Lloyd Pierce has turned Parker into a single-minded finisher. Parker is setting 24 ball screens per 100 possessions, about two-and-a-half times his career rate, per Second Spectrum, and he's rumbling down the lane on lots of those -- with Atlanta's centers spotting up around the arc.

At the same time, Parker is barely running any pick-and-roll; the Hawks have basically given up on Parker as an off-the-bounce creator outside of fast breaks. (They have also given up Parker as a wing, but everyone but the Bulls had already gotten there before last season.)

He's also shooting more 3s (ignore the percentage!) and trying on defense. Trying is not the same as succeeding, but it's a start.

I considered it a bad signing because the Hawks already had Collins. Parker is known for his offense and he needs shots to be successful. While Jabari was decent before the Collins suspension he really didn't explode until after he was suspended.

Hawks' Jabari Parker won't rule out possible return to Bucks after season

After a Wednesday morning shootaround with the Atlanta Hawks, Jabari Parker took some time to soak in the atmosphere of the newly constructed Fiserv Forum before sharing his honest thoughts.

After spending his first four seasons in the league with the Milwaukee Bucks, the former No. 2 overall pick now returns as Atlanta's third leading scorer with 16.9 points per game -- his most since 2016-17.

"It's real special, man, how they were able to build this building," Parker told ESPN. "I haven't played here but just seeing like the growth of the city, I really like the way that it's developing.

"It's just so sad that I'm not able to share it with them and that they moved on, but that's fine, that's business, but I do have like a little homesickness from being here. I just miss being here."
Spoiler:
Parker faces a player option for 2020-21 with the Hawks after signing a two-year, $13 million contract on July 11. He wouldn't rule out a future return to the first NBA organization that he called home, either. That's only if the opportunity presented itself.

"Never. I would never rule out a possible return here," Parker told ESPN. "I would never do that. It's just so sad how it ended and I wish I could've stayed."

While he says he's happy in Atlanta, Parker feels his joy for the game is "almost there," again.

"It's growing continually but in order to get that 100 percent joy and passion it comes with winning," Parker said. "I just want to be a winner."

Offense has never been an issue for the 15.2-point career scorer. However, his defense has raised some concerns. He ranks 242nd out of 256 forwards with a defensive efficiency of 116.2, according to NBA Advanced Stats.

"He's been a great scoring punch for us offensively which is who he is and what he does," Hawks coach Lloyd Pierce said. "Defensively, he uses his voice. The biggest challenge for him is the level of engagement that he can offer, being able to do that consistent and often but he knows that.

"He's still a young guy in terms of age."

Parker had a good game last night against his former team. Whatever motivates him. Parker openly expressing how he wishes he was still a Buck is intriguing to me. I expect us to eventually move him before the deadline.

Every NBA Team's Most Surprising Breakthrough Player This Season

Atlanta Hawks: Jabari Parker | Forward

Image

Jabari Parker appeared to die his final NBA death last season.

After his homecoming in Chicago went quickly awry, Parker was dealt to Washington, where he played the last 25 games of the 2018-19 season in relative obscurity.

After years of being a known and desired quantity, Parker was suddenly a non-entity. Eight days into free agency season (an eon in NBA free-agency time), the Hawks gave him to a two-year, $13 million contract.

It's worked out for both sides.

With Atlanta's offense struggling mightily outside of Trae Young, any offensive production has been welcomed, and Parker has filled that void. The 6'8" former Duke Blue Devil has played all of his minutes this season at power forward or center, and as such, his shot profile has altered somewhat radically. Where Parker was a former master of the mid-range jumper, he has cut back significantly on long-range twos this season. As a result, he is second on the Hawks in scoring—with a career-high effective field-goal percentage—and leading Atlanta rotation players in offensive rating.

Parker is still a subpar shooter and maintains an adversarial relationship with playing defense, but let's put those issues aside for the time being. As long as his improved efficiency persists, he'll have a spot in the NBA.

he sucks, nothing unique about him unless you consider it unique that he wears horse blinders while playing.
