Can we talk about Baynes...

Post#1 » by mudsak » Sat Nov 16, 2019 2:47 pm

Who can explain what is going on with Baynes right now? He is up in virtually every single statistical category for the season, and by a significant margin. This is is 8th year in the league, and he's 33yo. He's always hovered roughly around the same production throughout his entire career. He is earning more minutes this year, but that's probably due to his production more than anything. His per 36min scoring stats are double his highest output.

I know the season is still young, but at this rate he's got to be on the radar for most improved player.

Can anyone think of another player who played at such a mediocre level for 7 full years then just had a breakout season?

First it looks like he lost weight, he looks shredded as compared to previous years. The other major factors are System (coaching), Role and I really think a real pass first Pg in Rubio has made him pop. Its one thing to be a good big and play tough defense, but when you are actually given the ball to score, it tends to makes some engage in all facets of the game at a higher level.

First of all, let me say that I love Baynes. Man do I hate that Boston couldn't keep him. So glad to see him playing so well (although I wouldn't mind if he stinks it up when they play Boston in a few days  ). Boston needs a good big man, and he would have been perfect - sigh.
I wonder if last year's Celtic's team was so toxic, and so hard to play for that now he feels like he has a new lease on life (so to say). He just looks like he's enjoying playing the game so much right now. It's unbelievable how much a change of scenery can do for a player. In Boston he was a really good three point shooter, and now he has taken that to a much higher level - good for him!. I hope he continues to have an amazing year. Who knows, maybe he can win the MIP award this year.
In Boston we miss having "All of Australia" playing for us. :waaa:

I really think with his shooting and ability to move his feet and defend that when Ayton comes back, he should be the quasi starting power forward. Ayton is a bit of a tweener C/pf also in the fact that he can defend both out on the floor so together they should be able to make it work. Dont want to lose Baynes impact by him going to the bench.

He was pretty raw when he first suited up for the Spurs. I knew by the way he could move his feet he was going to be a solid player.

I never thought he'd have the 3 point shot he currently has.

His production may have been constant in his previous years but his skill level and conditioning have steadily gotten better.
The good thing about BI is he can shoot over defenders.
The bad thing about BI is he can shoot over defenders.

Channing Frye had a pretty underwhelming first 4 years in the NBA before the Suns signed him and turned him into a stretch 4. He went from shooting 70 3's in his first 4 years to shooting close to 400 in his 5th year. Not nearly as dramatic as what Baynes has done since Frye was 26 and Baynes is 33 though.

He was already defending the rim very well and rebounding even back when he was on the Pistons and they had like 6 centers for some reason.
He started adding the shot in Boston and now it's all come together for him. Happy for him he obviously is competitive and has put in the work.

Maybe not to the same level, but Kyle Korver's highest PER and PP36 came at age 33 and 37 respectively.

Massive fan on Baynes. Wish the C’s could of kept him.

He’s played under some great coaches in his career, hope he gets paid!

Baynes do all the things that don't show up in the box score. If winning games is the end product, you could make a case for him being a better player than James Harden right now.

Let's be realistic, once Ayton is back, Baynes minutes will down under 20.

He contributes so many intangibles that dont show on the box score. Colour me impressed.

If you are insinuating that the Suns are responsible for turning Baynes into a 3 point shooter, you need to pump those breaks and check Bayne's career stats

Baynes isn’t anywhere close to the most talented center... but he does a few things at an elite level and they fit perfect with Monty’s system.

Hard screens, maintain verticality on defense, draw charges, hit open 3s, pass the ball.

The way Baynes plays has been contagious, even Booker has been setting some hard screens.. can’t wait to see what a Baynes can do for Aytons development.
