To me, there seems to be a "slowness" in getting players back into the rotation and I guess they're being cautious but I think there's other motives, to get a longer look at the younger guys in bigger roles to see what options they have to make a trade without hurting the team much, and not to have to worry about minute distribution which Waiter's already had an issue with early on.
So let's look at 4 situations already this early into the season.
- The JJ/Waiters situation. JJ they just sent home because of not being in Heat shape, understandable. Waiters NOT SENT HOME because of not being in Heat shape, in fact Spo said they were working towards him being in "Heat shape" during the preseason(which Waiters did play some). These 2 guys being out led to Nunn and Herro getting more minutes. As Nunn proved himself Waiters saw his minutes drop leading to a problem and then he was suspended to try to get him under control. Now he's out 10 more games which allows more time for the younger scorers (Nunn and Herro) without having to deal with Waiters griping about time. JJ has not griped.
- The Olynyk / Leonard situation. Olynyk got hurt this summer but I think most agree he's a great fit next to Bam and probably a better overall player than Leonard(who will start and then sometimes get few minutes after that). Just seems that Spo/Riley are wanting to get an extended look at Leonard.
- Winslow, without knowing exactly what's going on, I'd say Miami is being overly cautious with Winslow's situation, possibly to get better looks at the younger guys.
- Butler, was allowed to be at the birth of his child but did he need to miss 3 games? He could have easily caught up with the team in Minnesota. Yes it was very nice to allow him more time with his newborn, but also maybe they wanted to look at certain young players a little more before Butler started getting his big minutes.
