Cole Anthony Could Be The Knicks’ Reward For Another Lottery Season
On the same night Cole Anthony flirted with North Carolina's first triple-double in 19 years, his hometown New York Knicks lost for the 11th time in 15 games during this young NBA season.
While Anthony and the Tar Heels are now 4-0, the Knicks dropped to 4-11.
So Anthony, who grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and spent his first three years of high school at Archbishop Molloy High School, now has as many wins as the Knicks.
The 6-foot-3 Anthony finished with nine points, 10 rebounds and a season-high eight assists for the Tar Heels, who haven’t had a player with a triple-double since Brendan Haywood and Jason Capel each did it 10 days apart in December 2000.
And yet, North Carolina coach Roy Williams called it a bad night for his star guard, who was 4 of 14 from the field with four turnovers.
"I've seen some really good players, and he's got a chance to be one of the best I've ever seen," Williams said. "But I also know when good players stink and that was him about half the game."
Speaking of stinking, the Knicks own the NBA’s second-worst record. Only the Golden State Warriors, who lost to Dallas by 48 points while starting a lineup that included Ky Bowman and Alec Burks, are worse at 3-13. One year after finishing 17-65, the Knicks appear headed back to the lottery again. They also appear in desperate need of many things, but an elite lead guard is at the top of the list.
Frank Ntilikina, Dennis Smith Jr. and the injured Elfrid Payton are solid players, but they’re not next-level lead guards like Anthony projects to be.
