Talk about odd timing when the season is getting underway here.

Local sports column on the situation: https://www.commercialappeal.com/story/sports/college/memphis-tigers/basketball/2019/11/08/james-wiseman-ineligible-memphis-tigers-basketball-ncaa/2513758001/

With the court putting a hold on the ineligibility, Wiseman bought himself maybe a week or so. That said, it seems like it'll be hard for him to fight this and win. Hoping for the best for Memphis though and at least there is always Australia for Wiseman!

I look at it like this. The money was given to Wiseman's family a couple of years ago when Penny had no affiliations with the U of M's basketball program. He was the East Mustangs coach at the time. The NCAA has no jurisdiction over what high schools do and not do when it comes down to the rules they follow. Had this happen while Penny is currently the Tigers bball coach and Wiseman was in high school and set to go to college, they the NCAA would have a case.

In this case, they do not have one. I'm not expecting this case to be some cake walk. I hope that Wiseman can finish a Tiger and doesn't have to go to another country to display his talents and abilities.

I actually think they have a fairly strong case against Penny and Wiseman as far as the rule infraction goes. Penny donated money to the school and thus is labeled a booster. He then paid a top prospect thousands of dollars to help him move to Memphis. The reason I think Memphis has a case is because Wiseman was ruled eligible, the NCAA said it was on accident, but then they said they'd honor the eligibility. The lawyer is also going to try and argue that "indefinitely" is broad and so it should be unclear if Penny was stilled considered a booster. He also will say that that money should be considered a living/housing expense which is something a high school coach is allowed to help a kid with. It'll be a stretch, but they are working every angle they can. If nothing else, Memphis will try to drag this out as long as possible (especially if it looks like it may not be going well) in order to let Wiseman finish the season out. If they deem him ineligible once the season is over so be it. Memphis fans will still have their memories from the stricken wins and Wiseman will be in the NBA.

In-spite of how both sides have a case against the other, I wonder if a committee or judge will look to offset the case due to the technicalities involve in the case?

The one thing about this city when it comes to sports scandals, its people always fine ways of weathering the storm and fine our way back from whatever hits it.

Wiseman withdrew his lawsuit. Memphis declared Wiseman ineligible and applied for reinstatement. Now we wait and see what is the punishment/decision from the NCAA.

Wiseman given 12 game suspension (11 more after sitting one already) as well as being forced to donate that $11.5k to charity. Memphis also may be targeted by the NCAA for a deep investigation now.

My take on this is that Wiseman's parents leaked info out to ppl. Ppl they talked to leaked it to certain ppl and know you have this situation here in the Bluff City. Loose lips sink ships. Also there is word around the media that Tiger Nation are willing to paid for Wiseman's fine as he's on a deadline to produce 11,500 dollars by the end of his tenure at the U of M. The thing is that Wiseman doesn't have a job that can help clear his debt by next year. Also what the Tiger Nation's idea to generate some money may create more violations for Wiseman as he's not eligable to receive money from a government based site like GoFundMe or other charitable sites for instance.

Yeah the GoFundMe was shut down. I think that given the situation you can argue that the 12 games sucks but is fair. The fine/$11.5k though is dumb considering Wiseman isn't allowed to work or get financial help from others.

I hate that Wiseman is stuck in this situation. He can't work or gain financial help. So how does he get himself out of this situation is beyond my comprehension.

That's the part that messed up. The NCAA knows that Wiseman can't pay for that fine straight up. Plus I bet if this was one of the prime powerhouse schools that had Wiseman with them, this scandal would not be open for discussion.

And now Wiseman is withdrawing from Memphis to prepare for the draft. Unfortunate for Memphis but I don't blame him for the decision.

It's very unfortunate and sad. I can't blame Wiseman for doing what he had to do. Thanks a lot to the loose lips and the NCAA for nothing.

I wish Wiseman the best of luck as he moves forward to a new career in the NBA.
