isn't Jokic supposed to be an at least average defender?

In all honesty I can't find the surprise on that list. Robert Williams is the only one close to a surprise, but that is the issue with Robert Williams right now, he finds himself out of position way too often where he cant be in a good spot to really defend shots. If he would be in better position defensively, he wouldnt allow guys to shoot that high of a % and he would be getting more than 15 minutes a game. Either than that, those are kind of the group of names I would've expected.

Ya good on KAT. A -16% difference is damn impressive. Also no shock AD leads the league with a -18% difference, the dude has been crazy good in that aspect this year.

Re: Dudes who allow opponents to shoot a high % from 6 ft or less...
Good thread..was looking at the list..not a surprise that AD is 2nd best in this category. KAT is 5th best in this category. Stats also match eye test for KAT..he has definitely looked much better defensively this season...also helps that he is finally getting some weakside help defensively...which wasn't a thing when defensive guru
Thibs was here
KAT's numbers of the above stat by season -
15-16: 56%
16-17: 60%
17-18: 61%
18-19: 55% (he had much better numbers when RoCo was fit but it became worse as season went on with all injuries to Wolves)
19-20: 43% (5th best in the league)
As always, question with KAT defensively is whether he can sustain this for longer periods or not. Also, defensive schemes of the team is really important while judging how good defender a player is and that's something which I have seen lot of ppl ignore..if Wolves were still using the stupid defensive schemes that Thibs was using when he was here, I doubt KAT''s numbers would have been this good.
Also surprised to see Embiid so low. Maybe he might be coasting defensively in the regular season this year I guess.

Who's the surprise here? Robert Williams?
Not really. The guy has unlimited defensive potential but he's very undisciplined as of now.
He's the type that wants to block every shot as opposed to consistently making the right play. It's also why he can be so foul prone.
It's an extremely common problem with raw athletic rim protectors.
I think with good coaching he will eventually be a great interior defender. I really like his long term potential, but not really shocked by this stat.

Maybe Chandler too because he used to be a great rim protector but it shouldn’t be that shocking in 2019.
That list had very few surprises actually.

Jokic needs to get in shape because he literally has no lift or lateral speed to challenge any shot.

Nance is such a weird dude. He was an incredible defender when he first went to the cavs. Dude blocked everything and played the PNR very well. Then all of a sudden he just sucks. Guess it’s another example of the dangers of paying someone in a contract year.

Jokic being this bad based on what he's shown in the past, and Robert Williams based on the fact that I've been repeatedly told he is a superstar in the making (remember he was a lottery pick that fell to the CelticsTexas Chuck wrote:NirvanaFC wrote:Karate Diop wrote:Data from NBA.com - There's some surprises on here, will be interesting to see how the list changes as the season progresses...

Jokic always was and still is a very good defender. Rim protection is just a small part of the defense. As a center, you can block (alter) shots at the rim or simply prevent players from shooting at the rim with good positioning. With good positional defense, he is forcing players into tougher shots - floaters or midrange jumpers. He is also collecting defensive rebounds after misses. That is Denver's defensive strategy and it is working, the Nuggets are first in the NBA in defensive rating.

Keep doing your thing K Love.

Most surprising name on the list is definitely Embiid. Wouldn't expect him to be that bad defending close to the basket.

Kudos to AD for finally getting to that DPOY level and being #1 among players who have played more than 10 games. KAT with a tremendous leap on rim D as well so far at #4. Both Lopez twins at #2 and #3 is pretty amazing and could help explain why Bucks have been so dominant on D to this point. Zupac is #6. Surprised Gobert is #10.
