Can confirm (@ShamsCharania first) that Orlando has received cap and tax relief on the $16.7M ($5.6M in three seasons) Timofey Mozgov contract. The Magic now go from $2.3M to $7.8M below the tax and have a $10.7M buffer below the hard cap.

0 reason why we shouldn’t be trying to grab a shooter right now. Crawford my guy what’s good!?

Woj pod.

Phenomenon of Luka.

Woj said we were really high on Trae Young that draft.

We didn't even have to go full tank mode that year. Once it was clear, past halfway, that the best we could hope for was a good pick in the draft, we should have run up the white flag. Even the last two games or so that we bafflingly went out to win would have elevated our number of ping pong balls exponentially had we lost. I can't remember how far our lottery odds dropped but it was by a lot.

Eh...reality doesn't care about odds...this is what actually happened:

Image

Dallas won the tiebreaker over Atlanta to get the 3d best odds in the draft. But it was Atlanta that jumped in the draft to get the #3 pick. Meanwhile Dallas dropped TWO spots to #5.

Memphis who tanked really hard got jumped by Sacramento and Atlanta dropping to the #4.

Sacramento who had the 6th best odds, jumped FOUR spots to get the #2 pick...and passed on both Doncic and Young.

Of note, prior to the lottery both Marc Stein and Zach Lowe reported that Orlando and Memphis were in trade discussions. The reported deal was Memphis' #4 + Chandler Parsons for the Magic's #6 + Evan Fournier + a future pick. So at minimum, the Magic were prepared to trade considerable assets to get a player they wanted. That the trade never happened hints that player was Doncic.

Interesting. I never heard about that proposed Orlando trade. Always so close....

I thought those were rumors or proposed trade ideas...

The Magic have been under the tax and have had one open roster spot. They've always been able to add a player.

The Magic are still over the salary cap, the Mozgov tax relief doesn't change that. From a free agent signing perspective, they can still only add a player with the Bi-Annual Exception ($3,623,000), a vet minimum ($2,564,753), or minimum ($898,310). Same as before.

What it does is create more tax space flexibility in a trade situation.

I mean fan proposed ideas. I think woj and lowe only mentioned that memphis was willing to move down to unload paraons salary. Nothing else. Then fans proposed this idea.

Also, in a recent pod of Woj. Phenomenon of Luka. He said we were really high on Trae. Not luka.

Luckily we got Fultz who will be a lot better than Trae Young. If Bamba develops he'll be the gravy.

Fultz is having a way bigger impact on winning.

What's not true? Young's defense is atrocious.

They basically have the same offensive rating and Fultz spent the entire offseason prohibited from practicing the 3pt shot. Fultz defense is in a whole different class.

Solid, above average backup C especially when asked to only play 15-18 minutes a night.

Offensively, he's such a small usage player who plays within him limitations so well that he can be effective in his limited role against starters or backups.

Defensively is where it's really noticeable to me that Birch is not capable physically of being a full time starter.

Right now he's being asked to play too many minutes, but he's performing as best he can.

Young is a vastly superior player at the offensive end. He is legitimately a very good offensive player.

The Hawks aren't even trying to win this year. They could've been decent, but they are still committed to tanking this year to acquire more assets. If they were trying to win, Reddish wouldn't even be in the rotation. They are starting him and playing him 25 minutes a night.
