Best players off the bench have been Smart (who is now a starter) Brad W, Rob Williams, Kanter and Green.
PER - Kanter 23,Rob and Brad 17, Green 14.
Good news is that's enough guys even with Hayward out to have a full bench!
Bad news is he is playing Edwards/Williams/Semi - despite them absolutely sucking. Not only does this rot the soul of your team - it loses you ball games. Playing guys JUST because they were draft picks or just because you like their off-court attitude is simply wrong in sports. Best guys should play. Sports are supposed to be based on merit.
These guys are NOT productive on the court with PERs of 8, 6, 4 - nor are the dominating defensively or playing great smart basketball that doesn't show up in the box score.
They have just been bad - just like the stat says. Brad is being stupid - and someone (Ainge) needs to call him out.
So what's the solution? Just play the top 7 guys 35 minutes each? What's wrong with throwing rookies out there so they can get up to speed? It's like 200 minutes of basketball for the rookies each so far, they barely play. I agree on Semi, though. He sucks out loud and hasn't improved in three years now, can't shoot, is not nearly as athletic as he was in college, etc. I'd give all of his minutes to Grant and Green. It's playing 4v5 offensively every minute he's on the court, but hey maybe he'll be a 42% shooter from three in a few weeks? Still way too early to make sweeping changes I think. Carsen Edwards has played 186 minutes, he's a small guard who is adapting to the NBA game, he's never going to be good if he just sits on the bench, giving all of his minutes to Javonte Green, who is a JAG, isn't the best for long-term roster construction. There isn't much to develop with Green, he's an athlete who can grab o-boards, play some man defense, be an 8 minute energy guy, but that's about it.
Kanter is getting into the swing of it, he's going to get 12 minutes some nights, 25 others, depending on bigman matchups, don't really see the issue with his playtime so far, plus he was injured for like 10 games, slowly working into it. Wanamaker has been playing 20+ MPG for a few weeks now. Seems pretty good for the 3rd PG.
There's more to an NBA team's goals than who is the exact best player at this exact moment. Sure, if you want to 100% win every single game and you have no motivation at all to get your starters rest across an 82 (upwards of 100 with playoffs) game season, you don't care about the development of young players on cheap contracts, you don't care about gathering data on how certain players play with others, sure, just play the starters 36 minutes and then spread the rest of the minutes between Wanamaker, Kanter, Rob Williams and whoever of Smart/Brown doesn't start when Hayward is back. But now your team is burnt out by January and when someone gets injured you have to put in your rotting rookies. RIP.
