RealGM All-Time Franchise Ranking - #29

Post#1 » by trex_8063 » Mon Dec 2, 2019 9:17 pm

1. Minneapolis/Los Angeles Lakers
2. Boston Celtics
3. Dallas Chaparrals, San Antonio Spurs
4. Chicago Bulls
5. Syracuse Nationals/Philadelphia 76ers
6. Philly/SF/Golden State Warriors
7. Miami Heat
8. Fort Wayne/Detroit Pistons
9. Houston Rockets
10. New York Knicks

.....

30. Minnesota Timberwolves

So what is the 2nd-worst franchise of all-time. And note (as per discussion in the last thread), giordunk specified we're to use the NBA's "official" lineages, which means the Bobcats/Hornets claim the '89-'02 Hornets history.

LA Clippers: 49 completed seasons, (.407) W/L record, 14 playoff appearances (.286), 7 playoff series won, never out of 2nd round, and . . . . Donald Sterling and his record of racism. I would HATE to be a Clipper fan worse than a fan of any other NBA franchise despite their recent semi-success and current contention.

Other candidates (forgive me if I forget anyone) include Sacramento, Charlotte, Memphis, New Orleans. And, I think stacking a lot of bad seasons is worse than stacking a lesser amount of bad seasons assuming the average season is the same though I know people differ on this.

Yeah, given how we're to consider the Hornets and Pelicans, and with the TWolves off the table, I personally don't think there can be any question that this spot belongs to the LA Clippers.

*They have the worst rs win% of any team left on the table.
**They have the worst % of seasons in the playoffs of all-time (even including the TWolves).
***They have never been past the 2nd round of the playoffs in 49 years existence.

Yeah, they had some good teams in recent history, but they've also had some real stinkers: they failed to win even 20 games EIGHT TIMES in their 49 years, and failed to win more than 25 games THIRTEEN TIMES.
They had an SRS worse than -8 TEN TIMES (worse than -10 THREE TIMES).

Vote: Buffalo Braves/LA Clippers

Vote - LA Clippers. Before the Blake and Paul era they were number 30 with a bullet as they've been around since 1970 and barely ever made it past the first round. This decade helped a bit, but I still think they're last based on how bad they've been for so long compared to a team like the Pelicans with a much shorter history.

Very poor participation in this one, but it looks unanimous for the Clippers. Have the next thread up already.

I disagree with this for one fundamental reason - the current clippers team actually came from Boston, and it was a marketing gimmick that they came from Buffalo. Bill Russell was actually a part of that team, and they are the one who are paying Bill Russell his play-time earned checks.

Sterling's racism taken into account, it may still be the worst... but, if we're judging by actual team, I think the CP3/BG era is far better than anything the Pelicans had. Competing four times in 50 years is better than competing 0 times in 25 years. That Clippers team was undone by injuries, and looked like championship favorites multiple times (such as when they beat the defending champion Spurs with a much better Kawhi, then went up 3-1 on Houston)

^ Here are the facts for anybody interested in the Clipper-Celtics story.

1. Back in 1978, Levin owns the Boston Celtics. Brown owns the Buffalo Braves.
2. They swapped ownership of franchises because Levin wants to own a team in California and he can't relocate the Celtics.
3. Levin now owns the Braves, renaming it to the Clippers and moving it to San Diego. Brown now owns the Celtics.
4. They did not swap rosters. Only 2 players who received minutes from the previous season was swapped from each team.
5. Levin was still responsible for deferred payments to Celtics players accrued from back when he was still the owner.

Long story short, it's just an ownership change. The Celtics are still the same old franchise they have been from the start. The Boston Celtics did not move to San Diego. They were not renamed to the Clippers. Just because Levin previously owned another team does not mean the records are transferrable to his new team. The Celtics never agreed to transfer its history to the Clippers like the Pelicans did with the Hornets because if they did, the Clippers would be hanging their championship banners in the rafters instead of homemade posters like this:
