Scouting Report:
Braves: Despite providing respectable efforts in his past two outings, Cormier is still looking for his first win of the season. A pair of homers doomed him in his Aug. 17 start against Brandon Webb and another pair of them factored heavily in Wednesday's loss to the Reds. In 19 career starts, right-hander is just 3-12 with a 6.94 ERA. In the two starts he's made since being recalled from Triple-A Richmond, he's worked 12 1/3 innings and allowed six earned runs.


Marlins: Olsen will face the Braves for the fourth time this season, and the lefty is looking for his first win. Olsen, who has never beaten Atlanta, is 0-1 this season with a 6.00 ERA, giving up 10 runs on 18 hits in 15 innings. For his career, the lefty is 1-3 against the Braves. Olsen comes off a tough loss at St. Louis. The lefty gave up six runs on 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings. He was victimized by three homers allowed. It was his second game with three homers surrendered this season. The Braves connected three times on April 25.

Scouting Report:

Braves: Smoltz has won consecutive starts for the first time since May 24, and his previously ailing shoulder hasn't bothered him for six straight starts. He's showing great command with both his slider and split-finger, and consequently, completing a number of damage-free innings. While completing eight innings during both of his past two starts, the 40-year-old veteran has shown no sign of fatigue. He is 2-0 with a 2.89 ERA in his past four starts.


Marlins: VandenHurk provided a big boost to the club in his last start, giving up one run in five innings, and he was the winning pitcher on the day the Marlins snapped their season-long eight-game losing streak. VandenHurk has not gone more than 5 2/3 innings in seven starts, when he lasted six innings in a no-decision against the Reds. This will be VandenHurk's third meeting with the Braves. He collected a win on June 5 in the second game of a doubleheader at Atlanta.

Scouting Report:

Braves During the eight starts that he made from June 26-Aug. 7, Buddy Carlyle went 6-1 with a 3.21 ERA. In the three starts he's made since then, he's 0-2 with an 8.79 ERA. A five-run second inning doomed the five-inning effort he made against the Reds on Thursday night. The 29-year-old right-hander, who pitched in Korea last year, relies more on aggression than dominant stuff. He's surrendered one earned run in 10 innings against the Marlins this year. His June 5 victory over them was his first in the Majors since 1999.


Marlins: Willis went deep into his last start, but still came out on the losing end as he was outdueled by Aaron Harang in a 5-3 contest with the Reds. The southpaw went 7 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits and one walk. He notched four strikeouts. He tried to help his own cause by going 2-for-3 at the plate to get his average to .208.

If the Braves plan on making the playoffs, they need to go on a run, and fast. They are six games down, and are in third and aren't looking to be able to catch the Mets. I'm sorry to say this, but I think the Braves reign in the NL East is over, I think the Mets are "the team" in the NL East now, and are looking to stay that way for a few years.

I don't think that way. I think that if the Braves aquire a better pitching staff then they will be a very tough team to beat. There offense can put some numbers on the board but there pitching has struggled most of the year.

They don't really need to go out and get pitching, I think they have it, they just aren't pitching to their full potential.

I don't think we have it. The only guys we have are John Smotz (who is a very old pitcher) and Tim Hudson. Then at the bottom of our pitching rotation is just herendous! We need guys at the 3,4,and 5 holes that can go out there and gets some wins for a ball club.

Our bullpen isn't great either, now Soriano is the guy we have to rely on the most. I think that Peter Mohlyn is going to be a average pitcher in the MLB once he develops his stuff.

D-Train went yard off of Buddy Carlyle tonight. You can not be giving up a homerun to the pitcher, that's embarrasing. That could be the run that the Marlins win by. The pitcher is supposed to be an easy out, a guy in the lineup who you know your going to get out.
