Hate to see anyone injured, obviously, but w/ Miles done for the season & McRae healing -- & especially if IT takes a while to heal -- we are going to be able to give plenty of minutes to Brown & Bonga.

I would *much* rather give those guys PG minutes, btw, than Chiozza.

Agreed...but I'd really like to see Justin Robinson. He is not quite as "Savvy" as Chiozza at this point, but he is a better athlete and better shooter/scorer. His ceiling is a high level backup and hopefully he gets a shot before John comes back.

Agreed -- I'd like to see him get minutes. Is he playing a lot for the Gogo?

Time to show some genuine love for Troy Brown Jr...and acknowledge that he’s a damn good all-around basketball player. Troy struggled with his offense earlier in the season but seems to be hitting his stride…and growing in confidence.

The 20 year old has been showing a lot of moxie and talent the last few games.…with tonight performance against the Knicks being the icing on the cake.

Troy is rapidly becoming that aggressive wing scorer with the ability to create for himself and others that every team needs. If he continues to improve his 3 pt shooting…watch out.

Troy is also impacting the game as a ball distributor and defender. Really like that he was given plenty of opportunities to be the primary ballhandler tonight against the Knicks.

Brilliant game as the leader of the second unit. When playing with Beal, Brad needs to give TBJ more opportunities to run the offense. That'll help everyone.

TBJ at 20 is well ahead of where OPJ and Oubre were in their 2nd years as a 21 year olds - and that's with his 3 point shooting % at just 30.2 - which will most likely significantly improve.

Agree 100%.

Last night this 20-year old looked like a veteran. Aside from his numbers I mean. His demeanor on court was something you couldn't miss. He led the team except when playing with Beal. Already an outstanding player & only going to get better. Plus... in @6 months, he can buy himself a beer!!

Troy is a terrific player and has so much room to grow. One of the areas I notice he needs improvement is using his left hand. He is really right hand dominant and has trouble maneuvering his way around with his left or finishing with his left.

I've also been impressed by Troy's mature demeanor. He doesn't seem to get too high when things are going well or too low when they are not.

Meanwhile, here's what's being said about Zhaire Smith. The player some of us here wanted the Zards to draft when they took Troy Brown Jr. This is from The Athletic.

Smith was a 2018 first-round pick of the Sixers who missed nearly all of last season due to a severe food allergy reaction. He’s only 20, but has struggled to make an impact even in G League games due to his limited skill level. A phenomenal leaper who does his best work in transition, the 6-4 Smith’s skill level hasn’t nearly caught up with his leaping ability – right now he’s basically a 4 in a 2’s body. The surprising part is that he hasn’t been able to bring his athleticism to bear, even in places you’d expect to see it – he rarely draws fouls, for instance, and his rates of blocks, steals and rebounds in the G League have been unremarkable.

DC... We may have everything we wanted in Zhaire... his name is Gary Payton II.
Rui still needs some work, but we all like the glimpses... But Tommy is crushin homers right now with TBJ, Bryant, Wagner, Admiral, Bonga, and Payton

Bonga too.

But still, Sheppard is doing pretty well with his late picks and waiver wire finds. The real test is the lottery though. If Rui busts, Sheppard's tenure so far will be underwhelming.

No... Payton is 27 y/o and has been a defensive savant and freak athlete for going on a decade. In over 6000 NCAA/NBA/GLeague minutes, nothing points to anything different.

The question is and always will be his shot (And his decision making to a lesser extent), but it appears he has made improvements in both.
Assuming he can keep his TS in the 52-53% range... We just picked up prime Tony Allen.
I dont think people realize how much this improves our team. Elite defensive guards that dont foul and rebound like 3/4's change the complexion of the team...

This generation is LOADED with playmaking lead guards. Put Payton on Kyrie, Kemba, Butler, etc... and watch a thoroughly mediocre game from a star unless they are simply hitting 30 ft jumpers.

I'd lock Payton up to a 3 year deal this offseason and never blink. There is always a place in the rotation for a guy like that.

That's a little unfair, Zards.

For one thing, you're not closing the book on a 20-year old kid like Zhaire Smith, are you? For another, he is posting a .604 TS%. Finally, since he was injured all last year, in effect this is his rookie season, making the comparison a bit unequal.

In any case... you weren't calling for us to pick Tony Brown, Jr.!! :)

"Some of us" may have wanted Smith; "some of us" may have wanted to trade down, "some of us" might even have picked Mitchell Robinson w/o trading down. But, none of us -- no one I can remember -- ever suggested that we pick Troy Brown Jr.

Not even once. Not a single hint.

Hence, if picking Troy was the optimal move (which maybe it was), then we were all wrong, every one of us. You, me, nate, Nat, & everyone else.

Jemerrio Jones is a fair comparison on D. The difference is that Payton can do things with the ball in his hands. He can run an offense and slash to the basket. You can live with a poor shooter who is a ball-handler because teams still need to guard him - at least when he has the ball in his hands. The problem with Jones was that he was an off-ball player who can't shoot. Smart teams can flat out ignore him on offense and double team the real offensive threats.

We should still be wary of Payton's 3-point shooting though. He shot just 24% from 3-point range this year in the G-League.

I understand you might believe in him, but he hasn't yet proven that he's a competent NBA player. How many Tony Allen esque guards are currently in the league? Not to mention the fact that Tony Allen made it to 6 straight All-NBA defensive teams. Is there any evidence to support your claim that Gary Payton Jr. can lockdown elite scorers?

Me unfair? On Christmas Day. Bah humbug. I just posted what a reporter who covers the G League wrote. So don’t shoot the messenger. Heck, I’m not even the messenger.

But the story does seem to make clear that it takes more than being a “great athlete”--which is what some here liked about Smith--to make it in the NBA.

Prior to that 2018 draft, I was touting Jalen Brunson as a surefire NBA player, who I thought would be drafted late first round or early second round. (He was the 33rd pick.). I loved Jalen’s sneaky good game with the ball in his hands, his poise and his high bball IQ. I was told by some here that Brunson wouldn’t make it in the NBA because he wasn’t a “great athlete” and didn’t have a “quick first step.” Well, he’s become a pretty good backup PG for the Mavs.

Yes, it's true that none of us was screaming for the Zards to draft Troy Brown Jr. I’ll be the first to admit that I’d never even heard of him. But it was apparent from watching film of him in college that, while not a great athlete, Troy had a very nice handle, was a good passer and had a high bball IQ.

In fact, Troy was not unlike Brunson in many respects.

The good news is that, regardless of what “some of us” wanted the Zards to do with their first pick in 2018, they drafted a young man who appears to be on his way to being a very good NBA player. We can all be thrilled about that.

Happy Holidays!

Agreed -- there's no direct comparison between those 2 guys (all the moreso in that Jones is much younger). I just recollected him & thought he was worth mentioning.

Payton is a terrific pick up -- esp. just to fall in our laps!!
