have you watched nba defenses from the mid to late 80's? this hand checking stuff was a big deal in the early to mid 00's when teams started playing real defense. it wasn't in the mid to late 80's when nobody knew what they were doing.

There were good defenders but not very many standout individual defenders or team defenses that I can remember (slick correct me if I’m wrong). The team I followed, The Sonics, got a rep as a good D team in the 90’s and did have a couple of good individual defenders and played a scramble, switching, get hands in the passing lanes, illegal zone kind of style that was effective in the regular season but not so much in the playoffs with a couple of notable exceptions. I do think the 90’s was more “physical” at least in the paint but if anything MJ benefited from the rules that let an offensive player be physical and aggressive as much if not more so that the defenders.
