Eh even as a Lamelo optimist I disagree. That shot is very ugly and fundamentally unsound.

I thought we debunked the shot mechanics and fundamentals myth with a the Ja can’t shoot because he has an elbow flare meme

LaMelo's mechanics are even worse
And Ja shoots like 2 threes a game. Just like Sexton last year, people just look at the percentage and go "he's a good shooter"
Fun fact, if there is a defender within 6 feet of Ja, he shoots 25% from 3. Which is still defined as being "open"
His percentage is artificially raised by him only taking shots when there's nobody even close to him, and even then, he barely takes any. 16% of his shots are from 3 compared to 25% from Sexton last year
He can shoot in the same way Lonzo can shoot. If he's wide open, he can make it, but he needs to create a frankly ridiculous amount of room to get his shot off, which is my worry with LaMelo

Ja still really isn't a dynamic shooter and only takes about 2 3's a game...So he's yet to really dispel the notion that he isn't more than an average shooter at this juncture.
Ja has been impressive but I always knew he'd translate decently well to the league because he's a really talented passer and ball handler, I'm just not totally sold on the upside as a complete player. I'm not sold on the jumper long term and the defense isn't any good...
Mecca and I get into it over this, but I'd still prefer RJ's archetype over Ja's as far as building a team out

I'm right with you on this
I was one of the first to bring up Ja, but that was before we went on that 2-30 stretch to cement ourselves as a bottom feeder. I thought he was a sneaky good prospect, but then the hype got too much
If you're building a team from the ground up, you need to build around a scorer. And to me, I don't think Ja is more of a scorer, he's more of a playmaker. He can score for sure, but I'm not sure he can score at the level required to be the #1 option on a team
Ja right now is a better player than RJ, but for me, in terms of theoretical ceilings, RJ would have the easier time being the #1 option. I keep saying it, but Ja going to Phoenix would've been the best place in terms of surrounding young talent. He would just have to playmake for Booker and Ayton and only score when absolutely neccessary

Yep this is spot on. I also just think RJ's potential future positional versatility makes him an easier piece to fit in plenty of lineups down the line. When you combine that with his ability to be a pretty good passer and so far a good off-ball defender then getting a do-it all wing like that to me is more important than getting a small ball-dominant point guard with questionable defense and a questionable jumper.
A lot of this discussion comes down to how efficient and consistent can RJ become as a scorer? If he's going to always be a sub 53-55% true shooting guy maybe the conversation shifts for me back to Ja, but I've seen enough good scoring games from RJ to believe that within 2-3 years he'll be much more efficient offensively which will tilt the favor to his side in this debate IMO.

Edwards on offense really reminds me of Jimmy Butler
but I do think there's some bust factor with him. You love that he can get off his own shot whenever but I gotta cringe at the idea of having RJ and Edwards both playing 30mpg together at below average efficiency for 1-2 more years.

But that’s moving the goalposts a little bit, as the notion was not that he was an average shooter, the repeated narrative last year was that he can’t shoot and never will be able to shoot because his form is broken. Yet he shot 36% on 5 attempts a game in the NCAA and is shooting 41% now in the NBA. Even the concession that he “isn’t more than an average shooter” is enough to all but guarantee that he will be a great player in the league when you combine that with his explosiveness and athleticism and court vision/passing. Not denying he’s not great on D tho.

The Knicks need a guy who is gonna be a star. A go to scorer. We do not need that. And I’d love to come away with a point guard in this draft. But id look to free agency. I’d move a lot to go up and get edwards much like the mavs with Luka

one of the steals of the draft imo
He might of been a steal at the beginning of the college season but for the last 3-4 weeks his name has been out there quite a bit with some great performances. He'll be a lottery pick.

He's no Luka. I would of given up more to go up and get Luka then i would Edwards and i still like Edwards but Luka had something much more special about him and is now showing it in the NBA as well.
