I think this guy will never be a key piece for a championship calibre team. Not a masai type move at all.

pingpongrac wrote:People really want to trade Gasol for Drummond? Drummond is still relatively young and he's very durable, but Gasol is way too important to our team. He was playing much better the last few weeks before his injury, averaging 9/7/4 on 47% shooting.

Pretty much the only thing Drummond does better than Gasol is rebound, which in turn gives him a lot more easy points in the paint. Gasol has the advantage offensively (shooting, playmaking, spacing, etc.) and defensively by far, and he doesn't clog the paint.

The only way I'd trade for Drummond is if Ibaka was the big salary filler going the other way, and we keep Gasol. While there would be some redundancy with that pairing since you probably couldn't play them together all the much, if the Raps want to make a serious run this year, they'll need Gasol.

It would depend on how much additional value we'd need to send with Serge but I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to it. He's productive, age lines up with our younger guys, and he serves as a large cap placeholder for a year and a half (does he opt out of 28.75mil next year? :dontknow:). If he looks like a longterm fit, great, if not we can still probably get decent value for him as an expiring.

Obviously as the current rebounding leader in the NBA he helps address a major weakness we have.

Low IQ, not a great defender, not a serious threat from 3. Basically everything this team avoids.

Good points. Counter point: we have high IQ players, good defenders, and three point shooters. What we don't have is good old fashioned size, toughness, and energy on the inside. And he's only 26 and would likely be productive throughout his next contract. It's not the worst idea.

but on the Raptors he would be a 3rd or 4th option behind Siakam, Lowry, Fred.....on the Pistons he's the 1st or 2nd option which is the problem.

looks like Ibaka + one first round pick would get the job done....maybe Masai could do two 2nd round picks instead

Fair take imo. But I think 1.5 years of Drummond is pretty valuable - if the cost isn't that high. Doesn't really change our future plans (if that plan is in fact a long shot at Giannis) and I don't think adding Drummond makes us worse.

He has a player option for next year which I hate but even more so with considering 2021 FA. He could pick it up, hope he doesnt get severly hurt, and take a max deal from whatever team swings out (ahem, Knicks). Every time a FA class is nice and a ton of teams line up for it, some teams inevitably fail on a marquee star and have to settle for overpaying someone else. Actually, the more I think about it, I could see that exact scenario panning out (he goes to NYK on a max deal).

BUUUUUT obviously the safe route is opting out and getting security in a 4 year deal right away which we definitely wont offer him.

I dont want to part with any prominent young guys (TD, OG) and I agree, no sense in a participating in a bidding war. But if we can do Ibaka + filler + 2nd rounder, he could legit put us a step over every other EC team except maybe the Bucks. He is a walking talking rebound on both sides of the ball and his distribution looked pretty decent (relative to the kind of player he is) to start the year.

I'm definitely in the camp of trading for Drummond

Using any combination of Marc OG Norm or ibaka + a 1st

I'm surprised how many folks here are cold to the idea of trading for Drummond. I think he may be our best solution for the rebounding issue this season. I can count at least 5-6 losses that were directly attributed to our defensive rebounding woes. I would do Gasol/Ibaka + Norm for Drum in an instance. We also have no reliable low post scoring options thus over-relying on the 3 point shot.

Oh, stop it. Drummond isn't as good as you've fooled yourself into thinking. There's nothing remotely raptor-like about him.

I still think if this move happens it would be Gasol over Ibaka. I know people here hate Ibaka. But Ibaka has more position versatility and could actually play with Drummond in big lineup scenarios. While Gasol and Drummond could never play together. I understand Gasol’s defensive value but his putrid offence negates a lot of that. He just doesn’t contribute to scoring or rebounding at all and at his size that’s a problem. Spacing as a concept is tremendous when he isn’t hesitant or scared to shoot the ball like he often is. Say what you will about Ibaka but he’s fearless offensively especially in the midrange. Gasol’s offensive production is borderline embarrassing.

Based on what exactly? This team needs someone who can rebound badly. Its literally teams biggest need unless we’re taking about another star player. We have lost a handful games this season alone based on the inability to rebound effectively.

I feel people on this board severely undervalue rebounding. One of the things that made Kawhi so good in the playoffs last year was him taking it upon himself to make sure he was grabbing rebounds. His ability to keep plays alive in the offensive end as well as the clutch rebounds he came up was the difference in winning the Bucks series. Our bigs were just not rebounding at a high enough level and he saw that and made it his priority. Once again rebounding is a problem this season. Board man isn’t here to save us. Rebounding needs to be addressed and Masai knows that. Thats why you’re hearing names like Tristan Thompson linked to the Raptors and now Drummond.
