Depends on how you define tough. MJ going up against those poisons team got put through the ringer, and he kept going to the rack. Kobe played through all sorts of pain including tearing his Achilles, shooting freethrow, the walking off the court.

Hunting little Mexican girls isn't really "tough".

Jerry West played through a huge number of broken noses. (I've seen various estimates in the 8-13 range.) This was a playground legend in LA as I was growing up, but it seems to be based in fact.

Also, I don't think being a flopper disqualifies you from being tough, since taking those falls onto a hard floor is no joke. So Marcus Smart and Bill Laimbeer both deserve consideration.

The fact that Kurt Rambis got clotheslined mid-air, landed on his back, got straight up, and then went after a guy bigger than him earns him a spot here I think.

Buck Williams needs to be on this team. He probably needs to be the captain of this team. Kermit Washington too

Speaking of Williamses, there should be automatic nomination into the selection pool for anybody nicknamed "Junkyard Dog".

Zeke was pretty tough himself. He worked too hard at constructing that legend to be saluted as tippy-top by the criterion -- but the sprained ankle game was impressive, as was his general leadership of the Bad Boys, as was the fact that he was one of the first guys to play the modern drive-and-dish style and to take the punishment that implies.

Maurice Lucas

/list

Seriously, there are plenty of guys for this list (Sloan immediately comes to mind), but I can't believe that I had to scroll halfway down the page to see Lucas listed only once.

John Stockton was tough as nails. In 17 seasons he did not miss a game! That is Marvel hero worthy
