After his best game. He was an unsung hero last night. Played good D. Grabbed some tough rebounds

PG (5): Smith/Payton/Robinson/Thomas/Wall
SG (2+1): Beal/McRae/Matthews (2W)
SF (4): Brown/Bonga/Schofield/Miles
PF (2): Hachimura/Bertans
C (3+1): Bryant/Wagner/Mahinmi/Pasecniks (2W)

Come on Sheppard. I'd cut IT (probably Miles too) and Robinson (maybe give a 2W), sign Matthews & Payton to 3-4y deals and bring Williams back (maybe guaranteed this season and unguaranteed next year).

His ability to keep possessions alive made me feel like we had our own Brandon Clarke. Thanks Tommy

As far as I can tell, Miles is currently still using one of our 15 roster spots. We were granted a disabled player exception for him but haven't used it yet. I think when we use it, Miles will no longer count as a roster spot, but the guy we acquire with the DPE will.

We were able to add Gary Payton and later Johnathon Williams using the hardship exception. We were temporarily granted permission to bring our roster size up to 16 and then to 17 because we had 4 and then 5 players out to injury for an extended period of time. We lost one of those hardship spots, I guess because someone is coming back from injury soon (Bryant or Bertans presumably). So Williams had to go.

Payton is going to have to go soon too, unless we ultimately decide to use our disabled player exception on him, or if we cut another player.

I'd definitely cut IT to keep Payton because I think Payton is a better basketball player. However, I really don't see how either guy ultimately is on the team next year because there aren't enough roster spots and we will have John Wall back. With that in mind, they may be thinking to go ahead and keep IT because they're trying to demonstrate that they're an honorable organization. Presumably, IT didn't agree to sign here under the pretense that he might be cut in the middle of the season.

I'm disappointed we let Williams go, but there weren't that many avenues to keep him at the moment, short of cutting IT. At some point, we need to use that DPE to find another big man. I'm assuming Sheppard is asking around but hasn't found a guy so he's waiting if there will be options on the buyout market. That's a long time away though, and we need frontcourt help right now. It might be prudent to go ahead and use the DPE on Williams, but I really don't know what other options are out there.

Regarding Mathews, I definitely want to keep him, but I seriously don't see a need to move him up from two-way status right now. We can continue to borrow him for the G-League for up to 45 days, and by then, Brad should be back and our depth crisis at SG will be over.

Bringing Mathews up to the regular roster would mean we would have to cut someone else. Better to just let him go back to the G-League when his 45 days are up. We have RFA rights on him next year so we can keep him no matter what.

I wonder if we have a wink wink deal going on with him. Knowing there are going to be moves mad. So we paid the kid a good chunk and told him. hold on, we are going to bring you back in a couple weeks we just got to juggle.
